FLIR Systems launches two new infrared cameras
posted on 18/12/2006

Thermal imaging enhances the ability to gather intelligence so that users can make informed judgement rather than simply be reactive and force them to make just-in-time decisions. It allows a potential situation to be intercepted before it becomes an incident, providing round-the-clock intruder detection. The technology creates a virtual fence/perimeter line without the need for supplementary lighting which can be expensive to install and maintain; in some locations it is simply too intrusive. It also eliminates the need to install additional cameras to cover long distances. By adding an infrared camera to an established CCTV infrastructure provides both early detection and full visibility irrespective of the prevailing light levels or weather conditions. Compatibility with third-party video analytical tools provides reliable unattended threat detection and alarm capability. FLIR Systems will introduce two new cameras at IIPSEC 2007. One is the first true day light thermal i... [more]

Axis launches network camera for use in buses and rail vehicles
posted on 15/12/2006

Axis Communications has introduced a network camera designed for use in buses and rail vehicles. The AXIS 209FD-R Network Camera is a palm-sized, rugged unit that can resist vibrations and high humidity in mass transit vehicles. The network camera provides crisp, digital video over an IP network. Stockholm Transport, one of the leading bus operators in Europe, is the first to order the AXIS 209 FD-R for its entire fleet of 2,100 buses. The company will install between five and six cameras all these buses during 2007. Measuring only 4 centremetres high, the AXIS 209FD-R fits even in areas with restricted headroom. Equipped with Power over Ethernet capability, the network camera uses one Ethernet cable for both power and video, making installation quick and easy. The camera uses progressive scan technology to provide sharp images of moving objects. It delivers up to 30 frames per second in Motion JPEG or MPEG-4 video compression standards. Encased in a tamper-resistant casing, the... [more]

Ganz DVR survives attack during bank robbery in South Africa
posted on 14/12/2006

The physical strength and operational resilience of Ganz digital video recorders has been demonstrated following a high profile bank robbery in South Africa. The 16-channel ZR-DH1621P Ganz DVR that was recording CCTV camera pictures at one branch of a national South African bank remained intact during the incident, despite the criminals’ attempts to put it out of action in their bid to conceal the surveillance footage of the attack. A gang of robbers targeted the premises and broke in during one evening after banking hours. Once inside, they set about damaging the internal surveillance cameras, hitting them with sticks to smash their lenses. Having done their homework, the gang then quickly moved into the bank’s ‘back office’ area, intent on disabling the Ganz DVR, knowing the danger to them of potential recognition and subsequent police prosecution if the cameras recordings survived. The unit was housed in a 19inch equipment rack and the assailants smashed the front glass of the cabi... [more]

Wireless CCTV cameras help track down flytipper
posted on 14/12/2006

Fly tipping is a criminal offence under the 1990 Environmental Protection Act, punishable by fines up to £50,000, or even a jail sentence. Salford City Council spend around £500,000 a year clearing up after fly tippers have done their dirty work in the city. A fly tipper, featured in the BBC's Real Story show earlier this year, has been interviewed in connection with alleged environmental crime. Salford Magistrates heard how Ratcliffe, the flytipper, admitted he had left a box and a bag of rubbish at Salteye layby, off Liverpool Road, Peel Green, in September this year, and ordered him to pay out £500, a fine of £100 and court costs of £400. When he saw other rubbish left at the site by the busy A57 between Manchester and Warrington, Ratcliffe thought it would be all right to dump his there, too. But the council had recently purchased some Wireless CCTV cameras specifically to tackle such problems. They checked out the rubbish dumped on the site, and were able to prove that Ratclif... [more]

posted on 14/12/2006

The Technion Israel Institute of Technology is the oldest university in Israel. Founded 1924 the university campus is located in Haifa’s Neve Sha'anan neighborhood on Mount Carmel. This post secondary school encompasses 1,325,000 square meters, which includes approximately 85 buildings. The university’s landscape and terrain presents several security challenges. The security perimeter of the campus passes through areas of rocky steep terrain, foliage and wooded areas that make it difficult to access, monitor, and patrol. The campus is encircled by fencing and adjoined by residential dwellings, as well as roads, private driveways and parking lots. Security personnel are stationed at operating gates and provide access control, baggage checking, threat mitigation, and security assistance to the visitors, teachers, and students.
