Northern Security takes over the business and customer portfolio of Hayde Security
posted on 24/04/2009

Northern Security has announced its take-over of a major North East guarding company - and hinted that more buy-outs are in the pipeline. According to Northern Security MD Paul Hopper, the economic downturn is providing an upswing in demand for his firm's services from both private and public sector clients. His company's latest acquisition was made in Stockton where Northern Security has taken over the business and customer portfolio of Hayde Security. Its guarding team will also be retained to work across premises in the NE ranging from offices to shopping centres and sports grounds. Meanwhile, said Paul, additional new guards are being recruited at Northern Security's headquarters in Upperby, Carlisle, and at its regional offices in Manchester and Middlesbrough. Hayde Security, added Paul, was a perfect match for Northern Security in that it combined high standards of client care with forward-looking policies on staff training and management. Siemens simplifies range of access control and CCTV products
posted on 23/04/2009

As a result of evaluating its entire product portfolio Siemens is to rationalise and consolidate a number of its products, whilst still providing customers with the choice of entry level to enterprise level, but in a much simpler format. At a time when most manufacturers are increasing prices in order to combat reducing revenues and high import costs, Siemens Building Technologies has taken a more strategic view. “This range rationalisation makes life easier for our installers and end users,” said Alistair Enser, Sales & Marketing Director of Siemens Building Technologies Security Products, “and it is also beneficial for us, since it means that we can make significant savings in our manufacturing and distribution costs. We are therefore very happy to be able to pass these savings on to our customers, particularly at a time when almost everyone’s budget is under pressure”. As an example of the changes being made by Siemens, the SiPass range of access control products and systems histo... [more]

NomaDesk File Sharing Software allows professionals to securely store and access files from wherever they are
posted on 23/04/2009

NomaDesk has announced the launch of the 3.0 version of its day-today file sharing service. The software allows geographically dispersed professionals to store files, sync, secure, access, transfer, and eventually share them from wherever they are, on or off-line. The NomaDesk solution is an alternative to traditional file sharing tools, which often lack mobility and the adequate security to go with it. Designed for digital nomads who either work independently or in small or medium-sized enterprises, the new version of NomaDesk’s solution features TheftGuard™ technology, which allows users to shred files from a distance. When a laptop is stolen, the user is typically no longer logged on, and therefore, the data on the hard drive is invisible, inaccessible and encrypted. However, if the password has been stolen or the laptop is stolen while the user is still logged on, NomaDesk can remove the data at the user’s request remotely. The information stored on the laptop is never lost, as it is... [more]

SMEs focus too much on external threats
posted on 22/04/2009

According to GFI Software's SME Security Report, whilst the basics of IT security have been implemented widely (96% have installed anti-virus, 85% possess anti-spam measures and 92% assign user passwords), only a worryingly low 45% of respondents have any form of portable storage device network access management measures in place. Walter Scott, CEO of GFI Software, comments, “Too much emphasis has historically been placed upon the need for anti-virus and anti-spam applications – external threats – and this has led to the common belief that with these, your network is secure enough. A secure network depends on many other factors and, unfortunately, the internal threat is far too often being ignored. There is a pervasive indifference towards monitoring the whereabouts of data and its ability to accessed or copied.” Scott continues, “Endpoint security is absolutely critical even in the best financial times, but with the economy prompting more and more redundancies, there are more disgrun... Databac shows secure ID cards at IFSEC 2009
posted on 22/04/2009

At IFSEC 2009, Databac will be showing cards constructed from a variety of materials, incorporating one or more technologies, designed for a host of secure applications, from staff ID to access control. It will also demonstrate methods of securing the data on the card itself, including a new product in Databac's range designed to block RFID reading of contactless cards, Secure Sleeve. Developed in the US by Identity Stronghold, Secure Sleeve is a FIPS201-approved card holder which protects Mifare, UHF and other contactless cards from being read or cloned. A welcome addition to Databac's range amid today's fears of identity theft, Secure Sleeve ensures that invasive communications - such as relaying, eavesdropping, cloning and tracking of ID, debit and credit cards - do not occur. Also on show will be Databac's newly-developed range of ultra high-frequency (UHF) cards and tags for contactless identification and tracking of products and persons in a host of applications. The UHF series... [more]
