Swedish Storage Company Selstor relies on QNAP network recording to smooth its Security Management
posted on 03/01/2012
Background Swedish self-storage company Selstor® provides rental units to individuals and companies for a week or more. The storage units range from 1 to 30 square meters. Customers access their individually alarmed units with their own keys and codes, which are available seven days a week from 5:30 a.m. to midnight. Challenge Each of the six storage sites is easily accessible and secured with video surveillance cameras. As the importance of safe-keeping what customers paid to store in the storage space provided by storage service providers became more and more demanding, it became clear that Selstor would need to gradually upgrade and enhance the level of security of all sites while deploying better surveillance systems to new sites that are in planning stage. The company needed a reliable network recording solution that can work with the existing surveillance system as well as the automation system that were already in place. Solution Due to the unique characteristics of the type... [more]

posted on 22/12/2011
As we quickly approach the end of the year, here are some Confident Technologies’ top 5 authentication predications for 2012. They include authentication trends that we think will emerge next year, as well as some predictions about some specific attacks that could happen next year. 1. BYOMD (bring your own mobile device) will spell big trouble for businesses in terms of data loss in 2012. Employees and contractors are increasingly bringing their personal smartphones and tablets to work and using the devices for a blend of personal and business related activities. 2012 will bring even more of this and we’ll see a few high-profile incidents of enterprise data loss resulting from allowing employees to connect their personal mobile devices to the company network without proper security protocols in place. The end result will be more businesses enforcing stricter authentication and security policies, particularly in regards to what information can be accessed, used and stored on mobile dev... [more]
Can Physical Security Industry continue to grow in 2012
posted on 14/12/2011
The third annual report from Memoori highlights that the growth in Physical Security Business can only come about during the next 3 years from a stream of more innovative products and systems that deliver on meeting the customers need to drive more ROI out of its investment. Physical security needs to move, as far as possible, from a cost centre to a profit centre status, if it’s to overcome the anticipated aftershock from the 2008 financial meltdown which now looks inevitable. This will dampen future demand but we are optimistic that as it can now deliver more attractive opportunities for clients to improve security and profit from it, demand will edge forward at a CAGR of 3.7% over the next 5 year period. The report identifies 5 emerging technologies that are already creating new business opportunities and also discusses advances in their development that will further impact on the business in the future, The former include: Wireless Technology. IP Networking Technology. V... [more]

Symantec global survey shows that SMBs are attractive to hackers
posted on 18/11/2011
Hackers are attracted to SMBs : Symantec global survey of nearly 2,000 SMBs revealed that 50 percent did not consider themselves an attack target. However, looking at today’s threat landscape, this is clearly a misconception. If a site is online, regardless of its popularity, it will be targeted, says Imperva. Below is an analysis by Rob Rachwald, Director of Security Strategy at Imperva, on why an SMB is likely to be a target: Why are SMBs attractive to hackers? Hackers are going after low hanging fruits. These are the companies who are less security aware and do not have the proper defenses in place. According to the 2011 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, hackers are increasingly targeting smaller, softer, less reactive targets since these provide a lower-risk alternative to financial institutions. Why would someone want to hack an SMB site (an application or server)? For a variety of reasons: • Data retrieval. Nearly all data may considered of value to any hacker who... [more]
