A Manager's Checklist for Cameras - part 2
posted on 09/02/2010

Lighting Lighting also can impact the type and placement of security video cameras. No doubt, in the out of doors, day/night cameras have a role to play. Still, there are unique lighting issues related to megapixel cameras. For example, when it comes to obtaining full resolution for higher-rated megapixel cameras, without greater levels of lighting than what is naturally in a scene, the camera will not deliver the optimum resolution. When it comes to lux lighting levels, they usually refer to the light at the sensor, not the ambient lighting in any given scene. Frame rate also affects low light performance. The longer the exposure, the better the image a sensor can produce in low light. But there is a tradeoff when it comes to moving images. Frame rate is also an issue with megapixel cameras. Many of these cameras can only deliver 12-15 frames per second. This may prove insufficient for situations involving small, rapid movements such as dealers dealing cards at a casino table ... [more]

Mobotix CCTV solution protects Huntcliff School staff and pupils from vandalism
posted on 05/02/2010

A Mobotix CCTV solution is helping to protect the safety of students, staff and property at Huntcliff School in North Lincolnshire. The installation of the exterior monitoring system has completely eliminated vandalism perpetrated by interlopers onto the 12 acre site following a number of instances last year which cost the school over £20,000 in damages and threatened to dramatically increase insurance premiums. Huntcliff School is a community secondary co-educational comprehensive school for pupils aged 11-16, near the rural town of Kirton-in-Lindsey. In 2008, the school experienced an escalating spate of vandalism, which culminated in serious damage to a roof area and windows. The past year's troubles were likely to increase the schools monthly premiums, taking money from its educational budget. As Ron Langdon, Facilities Manager and a former Deputy Headmaster explains, “Huntcliff is and always has been a popular and generally happy school and we never really considered the need fo... Two Redlands Unified School District high schools have deployed more than 100 IQeye HD megapixel cameras from IQinVision in a successful effort to improve school safety and deter possible incidents. Conduit Networks of Temecula, CA is the project integrator. The Redlands Unified School District serves the communities of Redlands, Loma Linda, Mentone, San Bernardino, Yucaipa, and East Highland. Planning for the future, Redlands Unified began upgrading the District’s network backbone in 2004. As the upgrade progressed, the School Superintendent indicated that he wanted to upgrade and expand the use of video surveillance and Redlands High School, the oldest high school in California to occupy the same location, was the first location targeted. “By mid-2007, we now had the network infrastructure in place to fully implement an IP video surveillance system, said David Massaro, Coordinator, Technology Services for Redlands Unified. Before the upgrade, Redlands East Valley High School had an... [more]

SafeNet's Luna hardware security module achieves Common Criteria EAL4+ certification
posted on 28/01/2010

In the hardware security market, Common Criteria certification is a regulatory requirement in government, financial, and insurance institutions. The international Common Criteria standard was developed to unify and supersede national IT security certification schemes from several different countries, including the U.S., Canada, Germany, the U.K., France, and the Netherlands. SafeNet, Inc. has announced that its Luna PCI for Luna SA 4.1 Hardware Security Module (HSM) has achieved Common Criteria EAL4+ certification. The Common Criteria Evaluation laboratory tested SafeNet’s PCI for Luna SA 4.1 and determined that this product’s security features are sufficient to protect against known and theoretical attacks. Under Common Criteria, a product is evaluated to one of seven specific Evaluation Assurance Levels (EALs). The evaluation tested a total of 70 features, 63 more than were tested in competitors’ HSMs; for example, Physical Protection, Authentication Tokens, HSM Firmware, Logi... [more]
