Device Freeze enables IT departments to remotely freeze computer screens
posted on 21/12/2009
Absolute® Software Corporation has announced the launch of Device Freeze. Built on tamper-resistant Computrace technology, Device Freeze enables IT administrators to remotely freeze the screen of a device and display an on-screen message, making the computer largely unusable until unfrozen by an authorised administrator. Commercial customers of Absolute can now use Device Freeze to remotely interrupt the use of computers and display an on-screen message to communicate with end-users. IT administrators can use Device Freeze in cases where they need a computer returned for servicing, auditing, or simply verification of who is using the computer - as in the case of a student who hasn’t returned a school computer at year end or an employee whose computer is due for servicing. When Device Freeze is activated, a persistent full-screen message is displayed to the end-user, preventing normal use of the device. The IT administrator can customise the message to communicate why the screen is f... [more]
PegaSys upgrades traditional mechanical doors to a fully electronically-controlled access system
posted on 18/12/2009
Ingersoll Rand's PegaSys wireless intelligent access control provides an instant and economical way to upgrade traditional mechanical doors to a fully electronically-controlled access system. PegaSys is an easy to manage system aimed at site managers looking to improve the security and control they have over their premises but who are unable to commit to a significant investment - or who don’t want the inconvenience of having to replace existing doors. It provides many of the benefits of a networked hard-wired access control system in terms of functionality, flexibility, control and security but at a fraction of the cost. It is designed to provide a simple solution to common access control and key management problems, such as replacing cylinders when keys are lost, unauthorised key duplication and the inability to audit who went where and when. Users are able to choose a level of complexity to suit their environment and access control needs. Not only is the system simple but it is... [more]
City of Marietta replaces analogue CCTV systems with IndigoVision integrated IP Video solution
posted on 17/12/2009
The City of Marietta, Georgia has replaced most of their standalone analogue CCTV systems with a complete integrated IP Video solution from IndigoVision. Buildings located in the downtown government campus and vitally important municipal utilities are now being protected by a distributed IP-CCTV system that can be monitored both centrally and locally by each department. “The IndigoVision system was deployed in support of the City of Marietta's strategic plan, which called for security cameras to assist with homeland security and crime prevention,” said Rich Tieslau, the City’s Director of Management Information Systems. “Improving video analytic capabilities was a key factor in deploying the IndigoVision system. It took too long to find an event with any of the old video systems. Another major push was to consolidate multiple systems to a centrally managed system that provided for better system administration and control.” The city’s operational performance has improved partly becaus... VSG wins contract to provide security services for the whole LSBU campus

VSG has won a contract worth £7.2 million from London South Bank University (LSBU) in Southwark, one of London’s oldest and largest educational establishments. The contract covers the provision of security services for the whole LSBU campus, including student accommodation and other outlying facilities, for the next five years. VSG was awarded this prestigious contract in the face of stiff competition, for reasons that included the company’s proven level of customer service skills, its costs, and its commitment to a consultative approach in security provision. The VSG team at LSBU will comprise 44 security officers, most of whom will transfer from the previous provider of security services under a TUPE arrangement. All of the officers will receive extensive additional training to prepare them for the enhanced service that VSG is providing, and to aid them in the development of their own careers. The officers will work principally from an on-site office, and provide coverage for the wh... [more]
Kalamazoo-Reynolds KeyTrak allows the pharmacy workers at Manchester hospital to remove keys without supervision
posted on 15/12/2009
The loss of pharmacy keys had cost a Manchester NHS Trust hospital over £6,000 within a 2-year period in re-keying and replacement locks alone. Further costs were incurred in the tracking down of lost / mislaid keys and trying to identify which employee last had the particular key. The hospital had previously utilised a manual pegboard and log book system which was prone to keys being removed without an entry being made in the log book. Also, keys were often returned to the wrong peg and this caused delays with issuing the correct key. Kalamazoo-Reynolds has implemented their KeyTrak solution at the Manchester NHS Trust hospital. KeyTrak allows the pharmacy workers to remove keys without supervision. All activity is tracked and users who wish to gain access to the system are required to provide a fingerprint or enter a valid password for verification purposes. Furthermore, keys can only be returned by the person who removed the key in the first place or by an authorised manage... [more]
