Overtis identifies top five loopholes that contribute to data loss
posted on 29/12/2009
Data losses over the past year have predominantly been reported by commercial enterprises. Of the 692 data breaches reported to the ICO since 2007, the highest number (205) were in the private sector. Corporate data losses were predominantly due to either theft (67) or disclosure in error (60). NHS data breaches came a close second with 201 reported breaches. Aside from commercial and health sector data breaches, losses have also been reported from government and charitable sectors. The main causes of data loss were stolen data/hardware (225), data disclosed in error (160), and lost data/hardware (166). Data losses for 2009 have almost doubled compared to the previous year, proving that common errors are being repeated. There were 415 losses reported to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) from October 2008 to October 2009. This compares to 277 from November 2007 to October 2008 giving a total of 692 data losses since the HMRC debacle. The figures reveal thousands of data losses a... [more]
ACTi Event Handler system turns IP cameras into active partners in your security solution
posted on 22/12/2009
Traditional CCTV Cameras are passive devices. They see, but cannot act. Whether all’s quiet or something’s afoot, they remain hapless observers. Cameras used to be passive devices, listening to commands from NVR servers. Now all this is changing. With the new Rule-based Event handler embedded system, ACTi cameras react with programmable responses. ACTi’s Event Handler system turns IP cameras into active partners in your security solution. Event Handler is a software package that is integrated to camera firmware. Customers do not have to replace existing cameras in order to make them smarter – they simply need to download and install a new firmware, for free. Some of the ACTi Event Handler funtions are very innovative. When something happens at the camera site, such as people walk by, door opens or closes, fire breaks out, or day and night changes – these are all events. If you want to detect those events automatically by a certain trigger, and respond to them properly then you need a ... [more]
EntryGuard emits an alert when an unauthorised person enters a restricted area
posted on 22/12/2009
Intrepid Security has introduced EntryGuard, a simple and cost effective alarm notification system that emits an alert when an unauthorised person enters a restricted area. EntryGuard, which is battery operated, is designed to be quickly and easily fitted in an unattended area. When the EntryGuard base unit detects that someone has entered a protected area, it triggers an alarm in a matching portable sounder. The range between the base unit and the sounder can be up to 30 metres line of sight although EntryGuard will also operate through most walls and partitioning over lesser distances. Selectable channels allow up to three pairs of units to be used at the same location. EntryGuard offers an ideal solution for environments such as doctor’s surgeries, computer rooms and libraries although, according to Noel Verbruggen, Managing Director of Hounslow based Intrepid Security, the retail sector is likely to have many more uses for it. “Retail staff are trained to be vigilant but the ... Korenix unveils JetNet 5018G Ethernet Switch for large scale surveillance network applications
posted on 21/12/2009
Korenix unveils JetNet 5018G, the Intelligent High Power Density Gigabit Ethernet Switch specifically designed for large scale surveillance network applications requiring high-port density and secure connection. Equipped with 16 Fast Ethernet ports and 2 Gigabit SFP combo ports, the switch is capable of aggregating up to 8 fast Ethernet and 1 Gigabit fiber/copper rings while ensuring the network reliability for various distance applications. JetNet 5018G outstands from other similar Din-Rail Switches with its advanced Layer 2 management features, including LLDP and JetView Pro, QoS, 255 VLAN, IGMP Snooping, GMRP, SNMP, as well as the MSR and RSTP surveillance network redundancy technologies to provide extended performance with secure data management in industrial environments. Combining rugged IP-31 enclosure, great heat dissipation and -25~70°C wide operating temperature, JetNet 5018G keeps your applications running non-stop in severe industrial environments, and thus becomes th... Video Smoke Detection is being applied in an ever wider range of scenarios
posted on 21/12/2009
Organisations need to carefully consider the impact that large scale fires, if left unchecked, can have on their operations and take effective preventative measures, especially when it comes to the targeted protection of key assets such as a multi-million pound production line. Sadly, many businesses never recover from a major incident due to the delay in re-building and associated customer loss. Commented Tim Maslen, Sales Manager at D-Tec: "The need for vigilance is highlighted by the fact that according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI) the insured cost of commercial fire damage in the UK in 2008 amounted to £865 million, up 15 percent on the previous year. There is also the requirement to deliver an early warning of incidents to non-commercial premises, especially historic buildings whose structure and contents, if ravaged by fire, are in many cases irreplaceable. It is perhaps not surprising, therefore, that Video Smoke Detection is being applied in an ever wider rang... [more]
