QinetiQ OptaSense protects gas pipeline in Turkey
posted on 18/10/2010

The BTC is one of the longest crude oil pipelines in the world and the Turkish section of the BTC export system includes four pump stations, two pigging stations, 52 block valve sites and the Ceyhan marine export terminal. Operating since 2006, over one billion barrels of crude oil have been exported to world markets through the Ceyhan Marine Terminal. QinetiQ’s OptaSense® technology has been chosen as the security system for the 1,770 km BTC pipeline on the Turkey section. The phased roll out of the system will see a further 600km of pipeline monitored by the OptaSense® fibre optic security system, also known as the Optical Fibre - Pipeline Intruder Detection System (OF-PIDS), following successful installation along 100km last year. The OptaSense® system is designed to detect, classify and locate potential threats to buried pipelines. Mr Hasan Alsancak BP-BTC Country Security Manager Turkey said “We pride ourselves on pipeline integrity and believe the addition of OptaSense® technol... [more]

Symmetry integrates with Gatekeeper Under Vehicle Inspection System to prevent terrorists from smuggling weapons into secure facilities
posted on 15/10/2010

One of the most significant threats is terrorists using vehicles, especially ‘trusted vehicles’ to smuggle weapons, explosives or people into secure facilities of all kinds. G4S Technology has announced the integration of the Symmetry Security Management System with Gatekeeper Security, a leader in automatic under vehicle inspection systems. The Gatekeeper Under Vehicle Inspection System is ideal for sites where the risk of security threats is very high. Using the Symmetry Security Management System with the Gatekeeper Under Vehicle Inspection System, these risks can be substantially reduced. Every time a vehicle enters a site it passes over the Gatekeeper vehicle inspection cameras and is automatically logged within Symmetry. The vehicle registration number is recorded via integration with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology and images of the vehicles underside are stored. The under vehicle inspection cameras, set into the ground, compile high resolution 3D images of... [more]

The Kensington ClickSafe Laptop Lock only takes one click to be secure
posted on 12/10/2010

New research from IDC has found that 9 out of 10 companies have experienced laptop theft on epidemic levels in the last year, and IT managers believe 45 per cent of thefts would have been prevented through the use of a laptop lock. IDC also found that 58 per cent of stolen laptops are taken from the office, and on average an organisation will experience 11 instances of laptop theft each year. However, even when a lock has been issued many companies find staff fail to remember to use it, overlooking the first line of defence against laptop theft. Kensington Computer Products Group has introduced the Kensington ClickSafe Keyed Laptop Lock, a simpler, safer and smarter first line of defence for organisations. Kensington, the creator of the famous Kensington Security Slot built into 99 per cent of laptops, has created a new standard in laptop security. The Kensington ClickSafe Laptop Lock is so simple – only taking one click to be secure – that user compliance is expected to increase dra... [more]

How to cut data security costs and still remain secure
posted on 12/10/2010

It has been a testing time for economies around the globe and, although many countries seem to be recovering, there are many voices warning of a double-dip recession. It is therefore unsurprising that financial directors are employing caution and continuing to grip the corporate purse strings tightly, limiting spending to the ‘bare minimum’. Unfortunately this scenario leaves many CISOs with the unenviable task of securing data whilst under the pressure of constrained budgets. Result : a timebomb waiting to go off and, if you listen carefully, you can hear it ticking. How Have We Got To Where We Are? Whilst reduced spending may be good for the company’s balance sheet, often data security has been the trade off. Let’s look at the evidence: 1. Companies now have tighter budgets and yet are working with far less staff. 2. More hours less pay – is now the mantra! 3. Mobile and remote working has gained in popularity. 4. Companies are faced with the unenviable dilemna : to get the... [more]
