FLIR Systems' SR-Series range of fixed mount thermal imaging cameras can now detect targets at longer distances for the same price
posted on 08/07/2010
Thermal imaging is the use of cameras constructed with specialty sensors that “see” thermal energy emitted from an object. Thermal, or infrared energy, is light that is not visible to the human eye because its wavelength is too long to be detected. It’s the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that we perceive as heat. Infrared allows us to see what our eyes can not. Thermal imaging cameras produce images of invisible infrared or “heat” radiation. Based on temperature differences between objects, thermal imaging produces a clear image. In contrast with other technologies, such as light amplification, thermal imaging needs no light whatsoever to produce an image on which the smallest of details can be seen. Thermal imaging provides full visibility irrespective of the prevailing light level and weather conditions. It can see in total darkness, in the darkest of nights, through fog, in the far distance, through smoke and is able to detect anyone hiding in the shadows. It is used for securit... [more]

Reliance High-Tech has selected Honeywell’s WIN-PAK PRO Central Station software to power its new managed access control solution. The service, which will be hosted by the dedicated Reliance Monitoring Centre in West Yorkshire, will potentially generate significant additional monthly recurring revenues for Reliance through the provision of ongoing remote managed access control services to its customers. Remote managed access control presents the ideal security solution for both Small to Medium Enterprises wishing to install access control for the first time, as well as existing access control customers who want to switch from a locally based system to a more cost effective and flexible remote managed solution. The WIN-PAK PRO Central Station remote managed access control software from Honeywell will reduce installation and service costs for both Reliance High-Tech and its customers in a number of ways including removing the need for dedicated on-site PCs at customer premises, reducin... One in five companies are still using couriers to send sensitive files
posted on 29/06/2010
According to a survey released by Cyber-Ark, 19% of companies are still using couriers to send large or sensitive files, the insecure transfer method utilised originally by HMRC which left a disc containing child benefit information missing in London. 24 months since the publication of the Poynter Report which was commissioned after the HMRC breach, and almost three years since the original misplaced discs came to light, and a similar breach could occur again. The survey showed that some of the lessons had been heeded, with 82% of companies now having systems in place to allow them to transfer data. A further positive conversion is the decline in the use of email, from 35% in 2008 to just 16%, and a considerable increase in the adoption of secure email, up at 42%. However, it’s not all good news as a worrying 67% have now adopted File Transfer Protocol (FTP) as their preferred method to transfer sensitive data with a risky 28% trusting web based services. When the software has been installed on a BlackBerry smartphone, users initiate an alarm by simply pressing a button. The smartphone vibrates to confirm that the alarm has been sent, and vibrates again when the connection is made t... [more]
