Lazy sales people most likely to cause a security breach
posted on 28/01/2009
The main cause of security breaches and data loss can be contributed to the actions of staff. A recent survey of IT managers has revealed that based upon personal characteristics, the personal assistant is one of the least likely to pose a security risk to the business. Network security vendor Clavister commissioned YouGov to identify the most likely culprits and those IT managers don’t trust. The survey revealed that only 1% of IT directors and managers that responded cited PAs as the type of employee that poses the biggest IT security risk to the company they work for. However, according to the IT managers and directors surveyed the sales and fieldwork force and operational staff are among those most likely to pose a security risk to the business. Someone who is lazy is also the office character IT managers feel most likely to pose the biggest IT security threat. “Companies have to act responsibly when it comes to protecting their business, including employees, partners, custome... How to Make the Best Use of Your Security Budget in Lean Times
posted on 28/01/2009
Many predict 2009 will produce the tightest economic conditions in decades. The subprime meltdown, tight credit markets and recession conditions will mean most CIOs will feel the downward spiral of the economy right where it hurts - in their IT budgets. Unfortunately, this also coincides with the most serious threat environment security professionals have faced. Hackers' tactics are becoming more targeted. The increase in the number and business importance of web applications is generating additional enterprise risk. Budgets may get tight, but your responsibility remains the same: minimize risk. It’s a tall order in the face of possible spending cutbacks, but because budgets are tight, you have to be focused on how to best reduce risk, and it definitely doesn’t mean less attention on security. In fact, at times like these, that may be the biggest mistake. The highest levels of an organization are asking their CIOs “how do we know we’re secure?” The only way you will know that... [more]
The PIPE hand-held device allows mobile patrol officers to automatically record and report the service delivered
posted on 27/01/2009
Providing customers with evidence that a security check has taken place is essential to building confidence and trust in the reliability of the service. Chubb Emergency Response has launched The PIPE, a small hand-held device used by mobile patrol officers to automatically record and report the service delivered. According to Scott Bennison, General Manager of Chubb’s Emergency and Response Services business: “The PIPE provides a complete report, quickly and effectively, showing times, dates, officers’ names, locations, and incidents, all presented in a daily bulletin.” The PIPE has three components: a data recording device carried by the guard, memory buttons placed around a building, and incident buttons kept in a pocket-size carrying case similar to a wallet. Each of the memory buttons contains a microchip with a unique ID number. As the officer passes, this ID is read by The PIPE, which emits an audible beep and flashes a red LED to tell him that the data has been collected. T... [more]
Protecting lone workers by satellite tracking their mobile devices
posted on 26/01/2009
VeriLocation has launched a new personal tracking service to help protect lone workers by satellite tracking their mobile devices. The launch means businesses can now track the location of devices such as PDAs – and staff who carry them – anywhere in the world. And that means staff can be protected without any need to invest in expensive technology. VeriLocation’s Andrew Overton said: “If you have staff who are always on the road or work unusual hours, this is a guarantee that their location can be traced if there is a problem. But there’s no investment in hardware needed, as it will work on any mobile device that has a GPS chip. That’s the majority of devices used by businesses in the last few years.” VeriLocation’s personal tracking software communicates the position of the mobile device through the GPRS data network the device normally uses to receive and send emails. Back at the office, information on the location of devices is accessed through a normal internet browser. In add... [more]
