Protecting lone workers by satellite tracking their mobile devices
posted on 26/01/2009
VeriLocation has launched a new personal tracking service to help protect lone workers by satellite tracking their mobile devices. The launch means businesses can now track the location of devices such as PDAs – and staff who carry them – anywhere in the world. And that means staff can be protected without any need to invest in expensive technology. VeriLocation’s Andrew Overton said: “If you have staff who are always on the road or work unusual hours, this is a guarantee that their location can be traced if there is a problem. But there’s no investment in hardware needed, as it will work on any mobile device that has a GPS chip. That’s the majority of devices used by businesses in the last few years.” VeriLocation’s personal tracking software communicates the position of the mobile device through the GPRS data network the device normally uses to receive and send emails. Back at the office, information on the location of devices is accessed through a normal internet browser. In add... [more]
You have a gaping hole in your security
posted on 23/01/2009
You have a gaping hole in your security. Actually, let me rephrase that. MOST of you have a gaping hole in your security. It’s really big. It’s huge. It’s the kind of hole that when you think about it, it keeps you awake at night, worrying about how little you can do if someone actually takes advantage of it. It’s the kind of hole that most people would rather not think about, so they push it to the back of their mind. They don’t talk about it. Its I.T’s dirty little secret. What is this huge security risk? It’s the potential abuse of Privileged Accounts and in the current financial environment, with companies either downsizing I.T staff or asking them to accept pay cuts, it’s more of a risk than ever. Privileged Accounts are those accounts that many I.T staff use to carry out their day to day tasks. They allow those users to carry out ANY task on the system they are working on, whether it’s a desktop, server, database, application or appliance. So what’s the problem? Wher... [more]
Security Shield offers complete protection against intruder entry and vandalism
posted on 23/01/2009
Security specialists have realized that electronic security measures are not a complete solution to burglary, theft and vandalism. Sophisticated CCTV, alarm and remote monitoring systems were not effective against determined intruder entry and opportunist attack. Security managers were left post-event with high quality footage of balaclava-clad individuals breaking and entering premises, and leaving within a 3 – 5 minute time frame, long before any local response could be placed on site and leaving an expensive clean up and repair operation. The ideal approach is a carefully considered combination of both electronic and physical products to suit individual applications. The primary objective of a tiered, or layered system of security is to prevent or deter entry. Subsequent layers will trigger an external response or alarm, in turn collecting evidence. Whether these electric layers are set up locally or via telemetry or on-line communication, the key is to prevent access in the first ... [more]
The impact of the Working Time Directive on the security industry
posted on 22/01/2009
Newspapers are starting to report about the likely changes to the frequently used opt-out of the 48 hour maximum working week clause, but what is the impact in the immediate and long term for the security industry? First of all, Don’t Panic! The amendments to the Working Time Directive are not finalised, they still need to go through another stage at the European Parliament. This final stage may introduce some level of compromise. Whilst many UK MEPs have voted in favour of the changes, the UK Government is against the change and is likely to use its influence where possible. Second, if the changes are approved, there will be a three year period to comply. This will give companies time to reflect on what changes need to be made and to negotiate new contracts with clients and employees. For those companies looking for loopholes and excuses, I’m sorry but they are one step ahead. What hasn’t been as widely reported is that the amendments look also at total working hours, with specifi... [more]
New Panasonic dome network cameras with wide-angle lens
posted on 21/01/2009
Panasonic has announced the launch of the BB-HCM527 and BB-HCM547 dome network cameras. Featuring an improved 73° viewing angle, SD/SDHC memory card slot and PoE power supply, it has never been easier to install or see into those hard to reach places. Both feature packed models include the improved 73° horizontal wide-angle lens increases the field of view without having to move the camera, and remote controlled 360° pan and tilt 137° functions from either a mobile phone or PC mean even larger areas can be supervised with just one camera. 2.3x optical and 2x digital zoom provide detailed views of a zoomed in area and giving the ability to focus on specific objects whilst monitoring. For easy installation and IP configuration, the camera employs (PoE) IEEE802.3af, which supplies power and transmits images through a single cable. No separate power supply is required and connection is simple... [more]
