The Thermal Matrix advanced security ACT system detects concealed explosives and weapons from a safe distance
posted on 07/03/2011
A continuing series of tragic incidents over the past 20 years illustrate the limitations of portal based security systems. On July 24, 1998, a man attempted to enter the U.S. Capitol building in Washington D.C. with a .38-caliber handgun concealed under his clothing. Knowing that his gun would be detected if he walked through the building's metal detector, the man tried to avoid screening by stepping around the portal. He was immediately confronted by Jacob Chestnut, and John Gibson, Capitol Police officers operating the portal. The man drew his gun killing both officers before he was stopped. On December 5, 2005, a man with a bomb vest under his clothing attempted to enter a shopping mall in Netanya, Israel. His suspicious behavior alerted police and mall security. When he was confronted outside the mall, the suicide bomber detonated his bomb, killing 5 people and injuring 50. Most recently in January of this year a suicide bomber killed 36 people and injured more than 180 others... [more]
Hikvision's compression cards used by CEVA Logistics' surveillance system
posted on 03/03/2011
CEVA Logistics offers customers complete supply chain design and implementation in contract logistics and freight management, with facilities in 170 countries and 46,000 employees generating a turnover of $7bn. CEVA Logistics has more than 1,000 branches and is the product of mergers between TNT and Eagle Global Logistics. Hikvision's H.264 compression cards are being used in the US, Canada and South America by CEVA Logistics. As a major transport and freight company dealing with high-value consignments and operating in sensitive sectors, CEVA required a surveillance system that offered quick, accurate retrieval, flexible recording options and remote monitoring of multiple sites. There was a need for optimization of bandwidth usage while still maintaining image clarity. Failover/redundancy was vital given the homeland security implications of the international freight sector. Each CEVA location presented different security challenges in terms of site layout and working practices wit... [more]

BikeRegister reduces number of bike thefts in Warrington
posted on 01/03/2011
Over the past few months there have been a number of bike thefts in the Warrington South area with cycles stolen from outside shops and other buildings. The suburban district of Latchford is a current hotspot area for this type of crime. Cyclists in the Warrington South area of Cheshire are being offered the chance to have their bikes security marked and details logged on BikeRegister. PCSO James Butterworth, of Warrington South Neighbourhood Policing Unit, has been hosting a series of community bike marking events using the BikeRegister system including one at a community centre in Latchford, where local officers were on hand to security mark bikes belonging to members of the public. BikeRegister uses a permanent and visible chemical solution containing microdots that is applied to the bike frame to form a unique personal code. A security sticker is then stuck on each bike to show that it is security marked. The details of the owner of each bike along with their address and postc... [more]
Invisible FluxSecure authentication technology allows products to be verified even through heavy and metallic packaging
posted on 28/02/2011
Schreiner ProSecure has integrated its new invisible FluxSecure authentication technology into self-adhesive products, to meet the growing tamper- and counterfeit protection demands made on security features for products and packaging. The FluxSecure feature can be quickly checked even through product enclosures and packaging. In addition, it is easy to integrate and ensures reliable authentication. The FluxSecure technology by Schreiner ProSecure consists of a magnetically encoded, extremely thin thread which is inserted between the adhesive and the masking paper. FluxSecure has a diameter of about 30 micrometers, which makes it thinner than a human hair. The delicate thread consists of a metal alloy mixture and is surrounded by a glass coating. The magnetic properties of the security feature are read out without line of sight, using a handheld reader or a sensor that generates a magnetic field. This allows products to be verified even through heavy and metallic packaging. The reade... [more]
