Coverbox supplies Quartix trackers to policyholders as part of its pay-as-you-drive service
posted on 06/12/2010
Quartix has signed a contract with Coverbox, which is expected to take delivery of 1200 of the company’s latest tracking devices a month – a total of approximately 15,000 units over the first 12 months. Coverbox is supplying the trackers to policyholders as part of its pay-as-you-drive service – a service which offers refunds if the system detects their mileage is less than anticipated or their driving is limited to off-peak periods when fewer accidents happen. Andy Walters, Quartix managing director, said: “Currently, Coverbox is primarily targeted at the young-driver and high-risk market. But it is virtually certain the use of telematics data in risk assessment will migrate to the fleet sector. “Fleet managers are already using telematics systems to modify driver behaviour to reduce health and safety risks and fuel costs, and it’s a relatively small development to share that information with insurers and to reduce premiums.” With Coverbox customers are charged a rate for thei... Strong increase of piracy incidents outside of the Gulf of Aden
posted on 03/12/2010
Drum Cussac says that over the past three months (September to November) piracy activity in the Gulf of Aden has dropped dramatically, while activity in the Indian Ocean and along the east coast of Africa have collectively increased nearly 60 percent – reaching an all-time high. According to the company, a big shift is taking place in the rate of piracy in the Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and off the east coast of Africa. “Just in the last couple of weeks we have seen numerous Pirate Action Groups operating in the northern Somali Basin,” said David Pickard, Head of Maritime at Drum Cussac. “This means ship operators in the region may need to consider adjusting their routes and tactics accordingly.” Drum Cussac’s Automated Piracy Threat Assessment System (APTAS) is a critical tool for analysing, reporting and making these types of strategic assessments. It enables users to create shipping routes throughout the world by balancing their risk tolerances against known threats and available ... [more]

Samsung's new high speed positioning cameras provide a robust and easy to install solution for demanding applications
posted on 26/11/2010
Samsung's new range of high speed positioning units provide a robust and easy to install ‘all-in-one’ solution for demanding applications such as highway monitoring and perimeter surveillance of airports, ports, industrial complexes and military establishments. The three units in the range provide a choice of a 50mm thermal imaging camera, a 37:1 day/night zoom camera or an empty unit that allows customers to select their own camera lens combination. All three units are supplied complete with a housing pan and tilt drive and a built-in receiver. The SCU-9051 incorporates a thermal imaging camera to detect objects and people at a distance of up to 1km in environmental conditions such as through smoke, snow, heavy rain and fog that would otherwise be impossible with traditional video cameras. Offering operators the choice of displaying ‘white hot’, ‘black hot’ or ‘colour scale’, the camera only requires a temperature differential of 0.08°C between an object and its background to prod... Iris recognition systems authenticate passengers and secure air travel
posted on 25/11/2010
AOptix Technologies, Inc. recommends the use of iris recognition to authenticate passengers and secure air travel. With an alternative approach to pat-downs and full body scans, AOptix offers a solution that will reduce wait time and help relax the anxiety associated with the security screening process. “The travelling public is telling us that they would prefer a quick, accurate, and non-invasive biometric authentication process as an alternative to full body scans or pat-downs,” says Joseph Pritikin, Director of Product Marketing at AOptix. “By securely processing registered travelers with minimal effort, our hope is that the TSA can spend more time on passengers who are unknown, and thereby pose a greater threat.” The notion of a registered traveler is not new to domestic travel. Willing individuals register their biographic information, submit to a background check, and are enrolled with a biometric identifier that can be used at a later date to verify their identity as they are e...
