Databac shows secure ID cards at IFSEC 2009
posted on 22/04/2009

At IFSEC 2009, Databac will be showing cards constructed from a variety of materials, incorporating one or more technologies, designed for a host of secure applications, from staff ID to access control. It will also demonstrate methods of securing the data on the card itself, including a new product in Databac's range designed to block RFID reading of contactless cards, Secure Sleeve. Developed in the US by Identity Stronghold, Secure Sleeve is a FIPS201-approved card holder which protects Mifare, UHF and other contactless cards from being read or cloned. A welcome addition to Databac's range amid today's fears of identity theft, Secure Sleeve ensures that invasive communications - such as relaying, eavesdropping, cloning and tracking of ID, debit and credit cards - do not occur. Also on show will be Databac's newly-developed range of ultra high-frequency (UHF) cards and tags for contactless identification and tracking of products and persons in a host of applications. The UHF series... [more]

Starlight camera offers superior levels of low-light performance for extremely dark situations
posted on 21/04/2009

The new Starlight camera utilises adaptive noise cancellation combined with the Sony Ex-View CCD. By incorporating frame integration technology, the Starlight camera now offers superior levels of low-light performance, allowing image formation in very low light levels. Two basic selections are available to obtain a good quality video image. When shutter priority is selected and light level goes down the frame integration mode will trigger first to maintain a clean noise free image with good colour rendering. After shutter slows down to maximum (128X increased sensivity or 2 seconds) but still cannot maintain 100 IRE video level, the AGC will turn on to continue to hold the video level on 100 IRE until the AGC pulls up to the maximum ( +32 dB ). The downside of this mode is that when the shutter slows down, the video images will become blurred if there is any movement. When AGC priority is selected and incoming light goes down, the AGC will turn on first and the shutter will b... [more]

Orsus Situator allows Virginia Port Authority to monitor visitors without Transportation Worker Identification Credential
posted on 20/04/2009

The Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is a Coast Guard approved common identification credential that is tamper resistant and contains the workers biometric fingerprint to allow for a positive link between the card holder and the card. The Virginia Port Authority has initiated a project to leverage Orsus' Situator to monitor visitors without TWIC. The program, being called Trusted Agent by the Virginia Port Authority, allows trusted visitors access to secure areas of the Port by providing them with a Nextel Sprint phone equipped with a radio and navigational system from Xora Co. When paired up with Situator from Orsus, it provides Command Center operators with the ability to track and monitor their whereabouts on Port property and directly contact them. The Virginia Port Authority came up with this solution after recognizing the challenges posed by TWIC requirements. TWIC requires that anyone needing access to secure areas of Marine Transportation Security Act re... [more]

London bus and rail commuters protected with FlatScan-POD mobile baggage scanner
posted on 17/04/2009

3DX-Ray Ltd has developed a new dual-purpose public x-ray baggage security system for use at events, sports arenas, stadiums and public meetings. Based on the company’s FlatScan-TPXi portable x-ray system, the FlatScan-POD allows FlatScan-TPXi to be used for baggage scanning in a public area as well as retaining its use as a portable x-ray system. It is ideal for both checking bags as they are carried in to public events and for emergency use x-raying suspect bags, cases and parcels that have been left unattended. The mobile cabinet-style unit can be quickly set up as a security inspection station, and moved to other locations as required. Once the FlatScan-POD is positioned as required the FlatScan-TPXi system is simply slotted into the unit ready to inspect bags. The unit is battery operated so its deployment is not limited by access to mains electricity. If a stray suspect item is found in the vicinity the FlatScan-TPXi unit can quickly be removed from the FlatScan-POD and depl... [more]

Majesty of the Seas upgrades PA and alarm system
posted on 16/04/2009

With a displacement of nearly 74,000 tons, the Majesty of the Seas was one of the largest cruise ships in the world at the time of her completion in 1991. Accommodating up to 2,744 passengers and 820 crew, she is chiefly employed by Royal Caribbean on luxury cruises departing from Miami, Florida, and stopping at ports such as Nassau, Coco Cay (a private island owned by Royal Caribbean) and the Florida coastal resort of Key West. Royal Caribbean International’s luxury cruise ship Majesty of the Seas recently underwent a multi-million dollar top-to-bottom refurbishment at the Grand Bahamas Shipyard in Freeport, Bahamas. An important part of the project was a complete upgrade of the ship’s PA and alarm installation from its well-proven but ageing Philips SM-40 system to the new Bosch Praesideo Digital Public Address and Emergency Sound System. During the renovation, the owners also took the opportunity to completely upgrade the ship’s PA and emergency sound system to bring it u... [more]
