Intruder deterrent system reduces vandalism and cable theft at Network Rail
posted on 12/08/2008

Following a spate of vandalism and cable theft within various parts of Network Rail's infrastructure, TEW Plus Ltd instigated a successful eight week trial of an intruder deterrent system using Derwent' System's new AEGIS White Light LED illuminators. During the day intruders are detected by sensors which trigger a loudspeaker that issues a stern warning to trespassers to leave the site. At night the sensors trigger Derwent's powerful AEGIS UFLED White Light illuminators which flood the scene with visible light. A day / night camera captures a colour image of the action and sends a text alert and email pictures over the mobile phone network. The presence of PIR activated flood lighting is a known deterrent to trespassers and vandals, the fact the lamps are mounted to imposing yellow boxes acts as an added visual deterrent. Dave Farman, Director, TEW Plus Ltd says, "The system really works. We can claim a 100% success rate. Since installation there have been no repeat incidents o... [more]

VESDA ASD systems protect Olympic sites throughout Beijing
posted on 05/08/2008

Xtralis has announced that its VESDA Aspirating Smoke Detection (ASD) system has been deployed in a variety of locations across the city of Beijing to help protect athletic venues, mass transit systems, tourist attractions and critical infrastructure facilities designed for use in the 2008 Olympic Games. The Xtralis VESDA system combines advanced, proactive air sampling smoke detection technologies to effectively protect large open areas with potentially high dilution of smoke, providing superior performance over conventional point detectors. VESDA detectors integrate easily with existing fire alarm and building management systems and can be deployed across a diverse range of operating environments. “From the time they step off the plane in Beijing, athletes, visitors, and members of the media will be protected by VESDA throughout their entire Olympics experience,” said Samir Samhouri, President and CEO of Xtralis. “VESDA's unique ability to detect the earliest presence of smoke will... Acumen Tests Cameras at Extreme Low Temperatures
posted on 01/08/2008

Acumen Corporation has subjected several cameras to extremely cold temperatures below -94ºF (-70ºC). Three cameras were tested Ai-IR59, Ai-DC75, and Ai-BU45S. To make this test particularly clean the cameras were “frozen” first with the help of dry ice in disconnected state. Once the desired temperature was reached, the cameras were connected to the power. The test ran for 2.5 hours. All parameters of the cameras were tested not the least of which was the visual test. In parallel the cameras were tested on the impermeability of enclosures and the possible appearance of condensate. Ai-IR59 was also tested on its ability to keep the front glass warm under these conditions. All three cameras have successfully passed impermeability test showing to sings of condensate. The results of all the tests have demonstrated the ability of Ai’s cameras to work under very extreme conditions well in excess of the recommended norms. ... [more]

posted on 30/07/2008

Mobotix AG has launched the Q22, the world’s first 360 degree coverage, 3 megapixel security camera. The Q22 uses no moving parts and features a unique hemispheric lens to cover a wider area then traditional fixed cameras with technology to digitally flatten, pan, tilt and zoom any image. With network convergence in mind, the Q22 can run entirely over Power over Ethernet (PoE) with internal storage buffer to provide localised recording in the event of network outage and to help deliver better quality of service, especially across wireless networks. For security managers, alongside its 3.1 megapixel quality delivering up to 25 frames per second, the Q22 has built in speaker and microphone providing bi-directional audio with full support for leading CCTV management platforms.
