Secure your business from recession related crimes
posted on 20/03/2009

Landlords, Property owners and Tenants are being urged to secure their windows and doors during the recession. With more properties being vacant and more people out of work, recession related crimes are more likely to be a probability that a possibility. “We have noticed a larger portion of our call-outs have been related to recession related crime recently. Examples of our recent jobs would include opportunist and planned break-ins, theft of data, theft of equipment” says Jerry from Lockaid, a national security company dealing with emergencies and preventative works. “We know security is a cost center, and traditionally there has been difficulty in articulating ROI on security expenditures. The problem here is security is more important than ever, and a company's information and physical assets are perhaps even more vulnerable.” Hard hit industries, such as financial services would a prime example where a disgruntled employee who had been recently made redundant, chooses to ta... New legislation dramatically raises the potential costs to businesses that fail to protect their staff and customers
posted on 18/03/2009

Nicole Vazquez, a consultant with the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, campaigns to raise awareness of the issues around lone workers. New legislation on corporate manslaughter has dramatically raised the potential costs to businesses that fail to adequately protect their staff and customers. Ms Vazquez, addressing an audience of business delegates at a Reliance Security Services conference in London earlier, cited the example of the Hatfield train crash in which four people died. Network Rail was fined around £3m for the accident, but recent changes to legislation have come with a recommendation that a firm be fined up to 10% of its turnover if found guilty under the corporate manslaughter act – which translates to a potential £600m fine for the rail company had they been charged and found guilty under the new act. However, Ms Vazquez cautioned that while the new legislation has made organisations revisit their safety provisions for workers, businesses were concerned at the additional costs t... [more]

UK organisations fail to protect data with encryption
posted on 18/03/2009

More than half of UK public and private sector organisations are still risking data breaches and leaks, because they do not have data encryption in place to secure information on laptops, handheld devices and removable storage media. This is one of the key findings of the second annual UK data security survey by Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. According to the new survey of 120 IT managers and senior IT staff, 49% of respondents said they had data encryption solutions deployed in their organisations. 38% said they did not, and 13% said they did not know if encryption was in use. This represents just a 1% increase in organisations deploying encryption to protect sensitive data in the past 14 months. This is despite 2007 and 2008 being the worst years on record for data losses and leaks, with over 30 million records lost by public and private organisations in the UK alone. In Check Point’s first UK data security survey conducted in November 2007 (the week of the huge data l... [more]

Driver Minder ensures safer deliveries to remote locations outside normal working hours
posted on 16/03/2009

Remote Video Response has launched a new electronic surveillance service with remotely operated CCTV cameras to help protect Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) drivers who make multiple deliveries at night. The new service, known as 'Driver Minder', has been introduced specifically to ensure that deliveries to remote locations outside normal working hours are safer for drivers. The driver seals the vehicle’s container at the base depot, before phoning through a seal number to RVR’s control room where an operator enters it into RVR’s ‘MASterMind’ management and control system. Once the driver arrives at his first delivery, the RVR operator confirms the accuracy of the seal number and verifies both the driver’s and vehicle’s credentials. Upon verification of the seal number by RVR, the gates to the depot can be opened, intruder alarms disarmed and designated doors and roller shutters accessed, all carried out remotely by the RVR control centre. Using existing surveillance cameras, a dedi... [more]
