FLIR Systems' SR-Series range of fixed mount thermal imaging cameras can now detect targets at longer distances for the same price
posted on 08/07/2010

Thermal imaging is the use of cameras constructed with specialty sensors that “see” thermal energy emitted from an object. Thermal, or infrared energy, is light that is not visible to the human eye because its wavelength is too long to be detected. It’s the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that we perceive as heat. Infrared allows us to see what our eyes can not. Thermal imaging cameras produce images of invisible infrared or “heat” radiation. Based on temperature differences between objects, thermal imaging produces a clear image. In contrast with other technologies, such as light amplification, thermal imaging needs no light whatsoever to produce an image on which the smallest of details can be seen. Thermal imaging provides full visibility irrespective of the prevailing light level and weather conditions. It can see in total darkness, in the darkest of nights, through fog, in the far distance, through smoke and is able to detect anyone hiding in the shadows. It is used for securit... [more]

Portendo and BAE Systems co-operate on civil and military detection systems for improvised explosive devices
posted on 08/07/2010

Portendo AB and BAE Systems have signed an agreement to co-operate on civil and military detection systems for improvised explosive devices. The agreement means that BAE Systems obtains an exclusive license to market, sell and manufacture Portendo's P.Eye-S in the United States and Canada, for the civil market. The P.Eye-S is Portendo's first product for remote detection of explosives, providing safer working conditions for security personnel at airports, military establishments, government buildings and other potential targets. The agreement also covers the development of a military detection system for roadside bombs based on this technology. It will, under a separate license agreement, be manufactured and sold exclusively by BAE Systems. This technology can be adapted to vehicle-mounted weapons and sensor systems, such as BAE Systems' Lemur, helping troops to secure an area and clear concealed explosives from a safe distance. "We have worked with several different initiatives... [more]

Skyguard transforms BlackBerry GPS-enabled smartphones into personal safety devices
posted on 25/06/2010

Skyguard's software update effectively transforms BlackBerry GPS-enabled smartphones into personal safety devices (PSDs), complete with all the features found on dedicated devices. This reduces the cost of providing effective protection for at-risk individuals and eliminates the inconvenience of having to carry additional equipment. The software update provides existing BlackBerry® smartphone users with greater functionality and an improved means of connecting to its personal safety response service.
