Public strongly in favour of wider biometrics use, in spite of confusion and civil liberty concerns
posted on 17/10/2006

According to the latest TSSI Biometrics in Britain Study 2006, the UK public is now overwhelmingly in favour of wider biometrics use. Seventy-six per cent are more in favour of biometrics than they were one year ago. The striking opinion change comes after a year in which the UK has thwarted an airline terrorist plot and 15 months after the London transport bombings of July 2005. Personal safety was identified as the biggest driver for the change: three-quarters of people believed it was important for combating terrorism. However, there is widespread public confusion about what biometrics means in practice, with the majority of people confused about the terminology. In addition, concerns about civil liberties were highlighted by almost a third of respondents. Danny Chapchal, CEO of TSSI Systems said: "I was astonished by the dramatic change in public opinion. Eight in ten people changing their opinion in the last year is a huge increase and can only be attributable to the terrorist... [more]

Preventing staff ID card forgery
posted on 16/10/2006

Forgery and counterfeiting are very much a reality in most industries today. People often want access to something they are not entitled to, whether it is out of curiosity or rooted in more sinister gain. In order to combat fraud and ensure unauthorised personnel do not gain access to restricted areas, many companies use ID card systems to great effect. Detailing the holder’s name, photograph, signature or colour coding cards to show access entitlement makes it easier to identify the owner at a glance. But what is to stop someone duplicating these ID cards and gaining access to restricted areas? In some cases nothing at all, other than access to a standard plastic card printer. How easy would it be to forge the ID cards at your facility? If someone has the right equipment, the answer is very easily. If this thought concerns you, then it’s worth looking at updating your card printing system to one which supplies higher forms of security, ones that are virtually impossible to forge and... [more]
