Operational performance benefits are unlocked by leveraging OpRisk controls and reporting data
posted on 06/03/2009
Global financial institutions are beginning to view operational risk (OpRisk) as a means of providing a more proactive management decision-making framework, as opposed to seeing it purely as compliance and reporting function. This is according to the latest report by independent market analyst Datamonitor, “From Compliance to Improved Business Performance Through Operational Risk Management (ORM).” The report says operational performance benefits are being unlocked by leveraging OpRisk controls and reporting data, and expects IT to play a key role in facilitating ORM through process monitoring, and the automating of reporting. “Against the backdrop of well publicized instances of fraud, wider systematic risks and compliance changes post-crisis – it is certain that there will be more stringent reporting requirements. In addition, regulators will become more prescriptive with management involvement in monitoring ongoing operations, as opposed to solely periodic reporting. Financial ... [more]

Enabling Secure Access for Web, Enterprise, and Remote Users
posted on 14/01/2009
The requirement to provide Web and remote user access to an extremely diverse range of information systems is one of the main driving forces behind the need for the latest generation of IAM-based protection systems. Two recent announcements in the still-consolidating Identity and Access Management (I&AM) market may cause concern for customers of two of the largest vendors. Firstly, IBM announced its acquisition of Encentuate, whose main offering is a Single Sign-On (SSO) solution. Secondly, HP is to discontinue sales of its I&AM offering, SelectAccess, to new customers. Business must take complete responsibility for the full and proper protection of the information that it holds, but that information must remain openly available to users who have the correct access rights. Operational complexity precludes organisations of any size from knowing the vast majority of their information users. Therefore, access to business systems needs to be managed using rules and controls that can be fu... [more]

Companies Have a False Sense of Confidence in Their Backup Solutions
posted on 11/11/2008
The results from the Databarracks annual Backup and Recovery survey indicate that overall, 91% of companies claim to be confident in their backup solution. Upon further investigation, 74% of those who do not use encryption or replication and do not take backups offsite are confident despite skipping these steps. Furthermore, 67% still consider their backup solution to be secure even though they do not keep or check backup logs and do not test their restores to ensure that they are working properly. Peter Groucutt, Managing Director at Databarracks says “the results of the survey so far show that although most companies understand the importance of having business continuity and disaster recovery plans in place, there seems to be a knowledge gap when it comes to understanding the technologies that are currently available to deliver reliable and fast recovery in the event of a system failure. These days it is not enough to blindly trust that backups are being completed properly." "Busin... [more]
