posted on 10/02/2010
An Edinburgh security boss has been fined for failing to provide information about his company to the Security Industry Authority. At Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday, Prinz Patrick Ukonga, 44, pleaded guilty to failing to provide information to the SIA when requested – an offence under the Private Security Industry Act 2001. Ukonga, of Tranet, East Lothian, was director of Znrip Top Security Limited based in Edinburgh, which supplied door staff to pubs and clubs in the area. It is no longer operating. The SIA received intelligence that Ukonga was supplying unlicensed door staff to venues. During the course of the investigation, SIA investigators requested information about his employees and contracts with venues. Ukonga did not cooperate with the investigation and failed to provide this information. He was fined £500. In sentencing Ukonga, Sheriff Graeme Warner said that the amount of Ukonga's fine reflected his personal circumstances, although he should not underestimate the ser... [more]
BitArmor acquisition enables Trustwave to help businesses meet evolving data security and compliance requirements
posted on 15/01/2010
Trustwave has acquired BitArmor, a leading provider of data encryption solutions. The terms of the deal are confidential. Encryption is the conversion of data into a format that cannot be understood by unauthorized parties. Encryption, along with other information security technologies such as Data Loss Prevention (DLP), Network Access Control (NAC), Intrusion Detection (IDS) and Prevention Systems (IPS), and Unified Threat Management (UTM) that are already part of Trustwave’s comprehensive security suite, form the basis of an effective, multi-layered strategy to ensure the continuous protection of information. The core of BitArmor’s solution is its Smart Tag™ technology, which provides a simplified and more effective approach to encryption due to its focus on the protection of the data itself – not the devices to which data is saved or the networks over which the data travels. Smart Tag technology works by attaching encryption policies to each file or folder resulting in Persistent ... [more]
IPSA and BSIA members pass the inspection for Approved Contractor Scheme in Northern Ireland
posted on 01/01/2010
In order to pass the inspection for the Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS), companies have to demonstrate compliance with the relevant industry standards and a quality scheme covering key aspects of the management of the company, its relationship with both employees and clients and also corporate social responsibility. The International Professional Security Association (IPSA) has noted that member companies of IPSA and the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) have achieved the quality mark of the Security Industry Authority’s voluntary Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS), as compulsory licensing of Security Officers and the voluntary Approved Contractor Scheme start to take hold in Northern Ireland. For many years, and certainly predating the Security Industry Authority, the security associations have been encouraging companies to comply with the relevant British Standards which are guidelines based on industry best practice. The associations have emphasised that their members are... [more]

Compulsory licensing and regulation of the private security industry in Northern Ireland comes into force

The SIA’s extension into Northern Ireland creates a single consistent licensing scheme for the private security industry throughout the United Kingdom. Today (1st december 2009), compulsory licensing and regulation of the private security industry in Northern Ireland comes into force. It is now illegal to operate in the designated security sectors (such as door supervision, vehicle immobilisation and security guarding) without holding a Security Industry Authority licence. Alongside this, the voluntary Approved Contractor Scheme has also been introduced for private security suppliers. The ACS raises standards in the private security industry in support of our wider aim of protecting the public. Launching licensing in Northern Ireland, SIA Chief Executive Bill Butler welcomed the first security suppliers in Northern Ireland to achieve Approved Contractor status. Speaking at a briefing held today at Stormont, Belfast, Bill said: “Today heralds a new era for the private security i... [more]
