Face, mimic and voice recognition for positive identification
posted on 23/07/2008
Databac Group has added a new multimodal biometric product to its range. smarti® applies a combination of face, mimic and voice recognition for positive identification for multiple functions, including access control, time and attendance and building automation. smarti® eliminates buddy punching and ghost workers, boosting productivity and ultimately the bottom line. It keeps unauthorised persons out of a building without worries about stolen cards or PINs and its multimodal technology means that no authorised person is rejected. smarti® can integrate with - and control - existing security systems using different technologies, thereby avoiding disruptive overhauls. It can also control electronic devices such as locks, alarms, lights and heating. With an integrated camera, it can even be used for video surveillance. The smarti® DIADEM unit features an in-built IR CCTV camera, IR LED lights, an eight-inch colour touch screen, motion detector, microphone, speakers, processor, built-... [more]
Consumers Have Fraud Concerns with Current Methods of Identity Verification When Accessing Their Accounts
posted on 04/07/2008
According to a Nuance Communications research, close to 60% of UK consumers admit to forgetting security passwords, and 80% believe there are security gaps in the methods currently in place for confirming identity when accessing their phone and banking accounts. The 2008 Secure Identification Survey conducted for Nuance by Harris Interactive contains responses from over 500 consumers over 18 years of age who have interacted with customer service in the past 12 months. The 25-minute survey focused on security and identity verification, providing specific insights for telecommunications- and finance-based account access. The survey gathered information on the perception and satisfaction of traditional security methods, such as challenge questions by a live agent and PIN/password schemes, as well as new approaches, such as voice biometrics, retinal scans and more. Key Findings of the 2008 Secure Identification Survey for the UK: * There is a need for alternatives: A meager 21% o... [more]

Biometrics industry needs to educate the public to stop to ill-informed speculation on biometric technology
posted on 18/12/2007
The recent press coverage of biometric technology in the wake of HMRC losing 25 million records has been negative to say the least. A US academic paper proving that it is possible to partially recreate a fingerprint from unencrypted data has been quoted and more recently six leading academics have written to a Parliamentary committee to express their dismay at the way biometrics has been proposed as a means to secure data. The national biometric ID programme is back in the spotlight with few supporters. And in the weeks preceding the HMRC data loss, a small group of concerned parents in London suggested “perverts will use (biometric) technology to track your kids”, a Shadow Minister branded the biometric industry “worse than ID thieves”, and anti-biometrics websites run by unqualified campaigners are quoted verbatim in the national press with no attempt to seek comment from industry experts. How is the UK biometrics industry to respond to ill-informed comment and wild speculation? The... [more]
