Biometrics customers are increasingly basing their purchase decision on product reliability and customer support
posted on 03/03/2009

Biometrics has rapidly emerged as a reliable and robust answer to the identity challenges of the 21st century. The use of biometric technology is fast gaining prominence in the commercial sector with time and attendance and physical access control being the primary drivers. Recent surveys indicate that the acceptance of the use of biometrics (fingerprint) grew to approximately 67% worldwide. With the increasing proliferation of the technology, the market recently has seen a sharp increase in the number of vendors offering a range of low cost biometric hardware and software products. The flooding of the market with low cost biometric hardware has in many ways created a dilemma for the biometric OEMs and distributors alike – balancing customer expectations with the quality and cost. While the short term benefits of these products are lower upfront costs whether they offer any long term benefits still remains to be seen. Besides the upfront hardware and software costs the life cycl... [more]

UK consumers are the most open in Europe to the use of biometric technologies to verify their identities
posted on 24/11/2008

According to the latest Unisys Security Index, UK consumers are the most open in Europe to the use of biometric technologies to verify their identities. The latest UK Security Index reveals that 75% of UK residents would be willing to allow banks, government agencies and other organisations to take fingerprints in order to verify their identity, compared with France (59%), Germany (62%) or Italy (63%). The Security Index also shows that financial security is now the biggest area of concern for UK consumers, with worries over the misuse of debit or credit card information having increased in the last six months. The Security Index report reveals that UK consumers have some of the most liberal attitudes in Europe to the use of biometric technology for identification purposes. posted on 03/09/2008

Market analysis from ABI research predicts that increased interest and investment in a variety of biometric technologies is set to push total spending to £3.7 billion by 2013, more than double the current rate. Despite the current economic downturn, experts expect the biometric sector to continue to prosper for a number of reasons. While biometric authentication technology has been slow to take off, Jonathan Collins, principal analyst at ABI research, believes that terror attacks have been a big factor in the increase in awareness. Increased emphasis on security in both the public and private sectors are also big drivers. Collins stated that while “Face, iris, hand, and speech recognition systems have emerged and are being adopted independently and alongside fingerprints ... (fingerprints) will continue (to) be the dominant biometric measurement for some time to come”. Jim Fulton, VP of DigitalPersona is not surprised by these predictions and believes that the projected increase in sp... [more]
