All biometric systems are probabilistic
posted on 12/11/2010
"For nearly 50 years, the promise of biometrics has outpaced the application of the technology," said Joseph N. Pato, chair of the committee that wrote a recent National Research Council report. "While some biometric systems can be effective for specific tasks, they are not nearly as infallible as their depiction in popular culture might suggest. Bolstering the science is essential to gain a complete understanding of the strengths and limitations of these systems." However, Stewart Hefferman, the CEO of OmniPerception, said that this report by the National Research Council that questions the accuracy of biometric technology is itself inaccurate and misleading. Mr Hefferman, who heads up the UK-based company, defended the accuracy of biometric technology following the report by the National Research Council. "The report that says biometrics are not accurate or sometimes “fail” is itself inaccurate and misses the point," said Mr Hefferman, who has worked in the biometric industry for ... [more]
Biometrics 2010 shares intelligence and experience on the practical implementation of biometrics
posted on 12/10/2010
With more than 1500 attendees, Biometrics 2010 is the largest European event for end users, suppliers and integrators to share intelligence and experience on the practical implementation of biometrics. In addition to a comprehensive 3-day programme featuring case studies, market analysis, technology developments and government research, an exhibition area featuring more than 50 leading suppliers and developers of biometric, smart card and identity management solutions runs alongside the conference. At Biometrics 2010 [Westminster, London, 19-21 October 2010], more than 50 top international speakers will convene to reveal how biometric technology such as fingerprint, facial and iris recognition is being used for large-scale government projects such as the world largest deployment of biometrics by the Unique ID Authority of India to law enforcement and border control. Away from governmental applications, biometrics are set to become more mainstream in customer facing applications suc... [more]
Horizon Password Reset service cuts the cost of resetting forgotten, expired or compromised passwords
posted on 06/10/2010
With more passwords to remember and the cost of a typical reset around £30, HTK’s new IVR-based Horizon Password Reset service allows IT departments to significantly cut their costs by automating the password reset process. The new self-service solution from HTK using Interactive Voice Response (IVR) significantly cuts the cost and time wasted resetting forgotten, expired or compromised passwords. Users simply call the IVR service and are taken through a set of pre-defined steps for identification and verification. Importantly, the Horizon Password Reset service enables multi-factor security without the need for users to carry a dedicated security token. The wide-range of available authentication options include recognition of the calling phone number, the keyed-entry of digits, biometric speaker verification using a pre-enrolled pass-phrase, and even a ‘challenge-question and response’ using SMS text messaging. Authentication options can be tailored for specific user-groups to pr... [more]
IEI Technology launches ACT series of panel PCs with built-in RFID readers
posted on 01/04/2010
IEI Technology Corp. has introduced the ACT series of panel PCs with built-in RFID readers. The integrated RFID reader makes the ACT series a complete access control and security system for commercial, residential, industrial, financial, educational and government institutions. The fanless design of the ACT series decreases downtime and reduces the need for on-site support due to cooling system failure. The system meets MIL-STD 810F testing procedures and the IP64 compliant front panel is sealed against water and dust intrusion. The built-in RFID reader works with EM and MIFARE cards and tags. The intuitive touch panel allows for easy operation and the built-in webcam and microphone can be used as an intercom through the LAN connection or as a biometric access control system based on facial and voice recognition. The ACT family of products includes the 5.7" RISC-based EM or MIFARE capable ACT-457A, the 8" EM and MIFARE capable ACT-408A, the 8" SVGA ACT-08A and the 12" EM or MIFARE c... [more]
Databac shows secure ID cards at IFSEC 2009
posted on 22/04/2009
At IFSEC 2009, Databac will be showing cards constructed from a variety of materials, incorporating one or more technologies, designed for a host of secure applications, from staff ID to access control. It will also demonstrate methods of securing the data on the card itself, including a new product in Databac's range designed to block RFID reading of contactless cards, Secure Sleeve. Developed in the US by Identity Stronghold, Secure Sleeve is a FIPS201-approved card holder which protects Mifare, UHF and other contactless cards from being read or cloned. A welcome addition to Databac's range amid today's fears of identity theft, Secure Sleeve ensures that invasive communications - such as relaying, eavesdropping, cloning and tracking of ID, debit and credit cards - do not occur. Also on show will be Databac's newly-developed range of ultra high-frequency (UHF) cards and tags for contactless identification and tracking of products and persons in a host of applications. The UHF series... [more]
