Mark Knight from Thales tells us about the Certificate Authority publishing requirements for the issuance of digitally-signed certificates
posted on 13/01/2012

Mark Knight, Director of Product Management at Thales e-Security, has written his latest blog post about the Certificate Authority publishing requirements for the issuance of digitally-signed certificates. In the wake of DigiNotar, the industry has woken up to the risk of corporate identity theft and the importance of the correct issuance of digital certificates. Mark Knight : Sometimes it takes a very public breach for the shockwaves to force an industry to tighten up security. I welcome the news that the Certificate Authority (CA) industry body that initially specified the standard for Extended Validation (EV) certificates has now published requirements (or standards of due care), for the issuance of publically trusted certificates. Certificate authorities that have signed up to the new requirements have 6 months to comply. Specific requirements that stand out include: • Mandating the use of larger/stronger cryptographic keys (e.g. no use of 1024bit RSA keys) • Mandating that CA... [more]

Today Neurotechnology released three SDKs for embedded biometric systems in smartphones and other mobile devices
posted on 10/01/2012

This morning, Neurotechnology, a provider of high-precision biometric identification technologies, announced their new line of embedded biometric technologies, including VeriFinger Embedded SDK for fingerprint biometrics, VeriLook Embedded SDK for face biometrics and MegaMatcher Embedded SDK for multi-biometric systems using face and fingerprints in combination. The embedded versions are designed for use in low-power, compact and/or mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, handheld computers and other embedded devices. The new products contain the same fast, highly reliable algorithms as the PC-based versions of VeriFinger, VeriLook and MegaMatcher, which ensures AFIS-level recognition quality and suitability for use in large-scale applications. VeriFinger Embedded and VeriLook Embedded can process fingerprint or face images in less than one second using a device with a 1GHz or better processor. The first available release of the new MegaMatcher Embedded product includes VeriFing... [more]

Tiger IT creates AFIS/Iris matching system for Bangladesh’s RAB leveraging Lumidigm Advantage
posted on 05/01/2012

Tiger IT Bangladesh Limited introduces a complete criminal identity solution, including iris and fingerprint biometrics and a database upgrade, to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) office in Bangladesh. Tiger IT sought out Lumidigm’s reliable Venus fingerprint sensors for the project in order to provide the RAB with the best tools available for tracking and investigating criminal activities. “Lumidigm has an advantage, in that their multispectral imaging technology collects unique fingerprint characteristics from both the surface and subsurface of the skin,” explains Rifat Abedin, Tiger IT vice president of business development. “The additional fingerprint characteristics that Lumidigm sensors capture allow for improved accuracy in identification and verification, even with an uncooperative suspect.” Tiger IT began work on the project in June and has successfully migrated the original RAB database into the new files. Training was provided by Tiger IT and concluded in October. Tiger IT... [more]
