Bag-in-Box Puncture Seal System Helps Seattle Public Utilities Implement Secure Water Plan
posted on 13/12/2005

In 2001, threats to public safety from terrorist attacks led the U.S. federal government to pass the Public Health, Security, and Bioterrorism Preparedness Act. The act states that a community water system serving more than 100,000 citizens shall conduct an assessment of a system's vulnerability. Easy access to safe drinking water is critical in the event of a natural disaster or catastrophic event. While recent hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean have focused increasing public attention on disaster planning, the reality is that many cities are not fully prepared to address the needs of their citizens during a large-scale emergency. For Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) of Seattle, Washington, ensuring an adequate, reliable emergency water supply for the more than one million residents in the greater Seattle metro area has always been an important mandate. Also, Seattle's Mayor Greg Nickels has declared the goal of making Seattle the best prepared city in the nation a... [more]

Kaba installs platform screen doors at Shanghai Railway
posted on 12/12/2005

Together with a local partner, Kaba has won the international tender issued by Shanghai Railway Traffic Shensong Line Development Co. Ltd., to install latest-generation platform screen doors along a total length of 2.9 kilometers on Shanghai's new Line 9 subway. Starting in January 2006, Kaba will begin to equip the stations of the new Number 9 subway line with latest-generation platform screen doors. They form a physical barrier between the platforms and the track bed and comply with the most stringent safety requirements. As soon as the train has stopped in the station, its car doors and the congruent platform screen doors open simultaneously to allow unhindered passenger flows. By the summer of 2008, twenty platforms with a total length of 2.9 kilometers will have been equipped with some 600 auto-matic doors. The project will take three years to complete and for Kaba Gilgen AG involves deliveries and services worth approximately CHF 4.7 million. All core components of the fa... [more]

IndigoVision Implements Integrated IP-Security for City Centre Museums
posted on 05/12/2005

IndigoVision's IP-Video technology is at the heart of a new integrated security system for Glasgow's museums and leisure centres. Housed in 17 different buildings throughout the city, Glasgow Museums is the UK's largest local authority museums service. The problem was how to centralise and integrate the existing security and CCTV systems which were unique to each site. A traditional cabled or fibred solution would have been too costly as the museums are up to 10 miles away from the new control centre at Blochairn. An IP-Network was the only viable solution. Systems Integrator, Visual Management Systems (VMS) teamed up with IndigoVision to develop an IP-based system that could integrate all sites to one central control room. Each site uses a traditional Ultrak-based analogue video system, which can operate independently. IndigoVision's 8000 transmitter/receiver units are used to convert video trunk feeds from each of the local Ultrak matrices to high-quality MPEG-4 digit... [more]

Ensuring accessibility without compromising security
posted on 02/12/2005

The challenge of creating an effective balance between security and access control is steadily growing. In addition to preventing theft and vandalism, building and facility managers are increasingly being forced to compromise between the need to control and monitor the movement of both staff and the public, while allowing increased access as set out by the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). Until recently, access control or building security could often only be prioritised at the expense of the other, but new developments in lock and access control equipment look set to allow building managers to resolve this dilemma and to comply with ever tougher legislation. prEN13637 European Building Hardware standard for electrically controlled emergency exit systems is already being adhered to throughout the UK. New buildings are already being scrutinised by Fire Officers and will not be approved if they do not comply with this regulation. In particular, prEN13637 stipulates that all ele... [more]

Gardiner to stage fire training seminars for CPD
posted on 01/12/2005

Fire legislation is moving into even greater focus for the construction industry following a series of reforms, notably with the introduction in April 2006 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, which will transfer the onus from the licensing authorities to the Responsible Person, i.e. the person who owns the premises or business or the person with control over the premises. The Fire Brigades are under strict instructions to enforce the legislation through considerable fines for non-compliance, which can be added to for every day until compliance is reached. The CPD Certification Service has invited Gardiner Security to organise an ongoing series of nationally run seminars backed by the BSi, BFPSA and BAFE. A panel of 10 manufacturers expert in their fields will teach architects, surveyors and other construction specifiers on the key issues, products and solutions required to comply with legislation such as DDA and False Alarm Management. Each two-day roadshow, held at regional ce... [more]
