Drink and Drug Driving Campaign targets irresponsible and dangerous drivers
posted on 06/06/2006

A summer Drink and Drug Driving Campaign to target irresponsible and dangerous drivers has begun in all 43 police forces across England and Wales. This annual campaign targets drink and drug drivers to ensure we drive down casualties on our roads and bring offenders to justice. The targeted campaign is focused on the fact that during the summer months people are out more in the afternoon and evenings enjoying themselves and often using their vehicles. The number of deaths caused by drivers with illegal levels of alcohol in their body has risen by 130 between 1998 and 2004. This is unacceptable. This year, in addition, the Football World Cup commences on the 9 June 2006 and will be a time for people to celebrate either in their own home, other people’s homes, or by going to a local pub. This often involves drinking alcohol. That is fine providing that once they have done this they do not get in a car and drive or on their motorbike. This campaign is not targeted at football fans, it ... [more]

Rutgers University selects InterAct Public Safety Systems to respond quickly to emergency situations
posted on 06/06/2006

InterAct Public Safety Systems has announced that Rutgers University in New Jersey has chosen its entire suite of products, including Computer-Aided Dispatch(CAD), Records Management Solutions (RMS), and Mobile Solutions to enhance the efficiency of its dispatchers, police officers, and emergency services personnel. These integrated products will allow the University to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations. Communications Officers found that the University's previous system was inadequate in addressing the need to retrieve appropriate reports and to capture critical information such as safety policies and procedures and building diagrams. Critical moments of response time were lost during alarm activations, as dispatchers had to refer to a paper manual to identify the alarm code and often had to operate separate systems. InterAct CAD software will provide university communications officers with clear guidance in receiving and managing emergency calls. Rutgers Di... [more]

E2S and PACSCOM supply emergency warning system to Wembley Arena construction site
posted on 30/05/2006

E2S and PACSCOM have joined forces to supply John Sisk, the family-owned building contractors and civil engineers, with a radio-based audible warning system to give open area protection on the Wembley Arena construction site. The Wembley system enables any worker to give a warning if a fire or other dangerous incident occurs. It consists of six E2S 120dB sounders arranged in three clusters of two devices, initiated from any of the seven manual call points (MCPs) located around the site. The MCPs, each one attached to a PACSNET 300T radio transmitter communicates with the master control panel by radio. When it receives a Beak Glass signal, The master control panel activates all or some of the sounder clusters by radio communication with battery backed slave panels with local wiring to the sounders. The sounders have a typical effective range of 70 metres in an environment with an ambient noise level of 70 - 80 dB and specific tones for "small fire or other safety incident" an... [more]

Updated BSI standards for fire fighting systems and fire extinguishing installations and equipment
posted on 26/05/2006

The British Standards Institution (BSI) has announced the publication of updated standards to BS 5306-1:1976. BS 9990:2006 Code of practice for non-automatic fire-fighting systems in buildings and BS 5306-1:2006 Code of practice for fire extinguishing installations and equipment on premises – Part 1: Hose reels and foam inlets provide information and sources of reference to all users. BS 9990:2006 brings up to date the guidance on private fire mains (both internal and external) and gives recommendations for non-automatic fire fighting systems in buildings. It covers good practice in matters affecting the design, installation, testing and maintenance of such systems including wet and dry fire-fighting mains. The principal changes from BS 5306-1:1976 are that BS 9990:2006 no longer gives guidance on when and where such systems are needed (which is now provided, for example, in guidance supporting national building regulations), but deals solely with the design of the systems, including...
