Control and monitor security and surveillance activities over a standard Internet connection
posted on 06/10/2008
Autonomy Corporation plc has unveiled its new Situational Awareness Web Portal that offers global companies the ability to control and monitor their security and surveillance activities through a rich user interface accessible over a standard Internet connection. This Portal not only provides security officers with a secure, comprehensive view and analysis of security scenarios, but it also allows them access to all relevant intelligence information without being restricted to the Security and Control Centre. This frees security officers to engage in hands-on investigation and monitoring throughout the premise, allowing them to keep abreast of the situation on the rest of the premises via a mobile device, or through portals installed in strategic locations. Built on Autonomy’s Meaning Based Computing technology, IDOL, the Portal is an extension to Autonomy Virage’s Command and Control platform that brings together information from a wide range of applications and allows holistic moni... Advanced sensing technology identifies security threats 25 metres before they even enter the arena
posted on 03/10/2008
London 2012 has put security of sporting arenas – traditionally difficult to monitor – in the spotlight. Advanced sensing technology is now being installed to stop security threats 25 metres before they even enter the arena. “With the 2012 London Olympics approaching, the need for advanced security measures in sporting arenas has never been more critical – and this is where sensing technology delivers. The sensing experts across our network have produced a range of state-of-the-art sensors, many of which are being used by security agencies to mitigate terrorist attacks,” says Phil Cooper, Director of the Sensing & Instrumentation Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN). ThruVision Ltd is now deploying passive security screening products that display images of objects concealed under clothing from a distance. Unlike X-ray systems, ThruVision’s products are totally passive. ThruVision’s sensors collect terahertz waves (low-energy waves, naturally produced by people and objects) to provi... [more]
Security spending in airports still expected to increase despite crisis in the airport transport industry
posted on 02/10/2008
Crisis in the airport transport industry is taking its toll. Companies like British tour operator XL, Italian flag airline Alitalia and London-based K&S are being thrown out of business; with global economic downturn and volatile fuel prices playing a significant role in their fate. With a worldwide recession a step away the crisis on the airport transport industry does not have any precedent. However, securing airports and flights from terrorist and criminal attacks is a major issue for airport administrators. National and international bodies, like the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation – EUROCONTROL, are unwilling to reduce security levels in cost cutting favour. The increase in fuel prices and the credit crunch are pushing out of business airlines and tour operators around the world. Despite this situation, security spending in airports is still ex... [more]
Cepac corrugated packaging plants exploits the benefits of CCTV
posted on 26/09/2008
Cepac are utilising cameras manufactured by Samsung Techwin at their Rotherham site for both health and safety and management information purposes, as well as for security. Cepac produce ‘retail friendly packaging’ with a corrugator machine capable of running at speeds of up to 400 metres per minute. “The machine, which is 100 metres long, is extremely safe to operate but when operating at full capacity can become very hot,” said Cepac’s Wayne Cusworth. “The CCTV cameras are therefore proving very useful as they allow our operators to monitor in detail the production process without having to get too close to the machinery. There is the added bonus that if production is delayed the recorded video can be reviewed to identify the cause of the problem.” Twelve Samsung Techwin SDC-415 530 TV lines Day/Night colour cameras have been installed along the production line by Ferrybridge based CCTV specialists DJ Byers Ltd. “We had installed SDC-415’s cameras on other projects and so were ... SPO Technology scans for weapons and explosive materials at Minneapolis Airport
posted on 25/09/2008
The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has deployed QinetiQ North America’s new mass transit security solution at the Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) International Airport to enhance security measures surrounding the 2008 Republican National Convention. TSA used QinetiQ’s millimetre wave, passive stand-off detection solution – called "SPO Technology" – to scan for weapons and explosive materials in and near MSP International Airport. SPO Technology has already proven successful in both air and surface transport use. TSA for the very first time operationally deployed this new threat technology solution at the Denver International Airport during the 2008 Democratic National Convention. “TSA is committed to providing technologies and solutions that make the US safe for travel, and we’re honoured that they have turned to QinetiQ North America to help them,” said Dr William Ribich, President of the Technology Solutions Group, QinetiQ North America. “SPO Technology is a perfect exam...
