The keyboard is here to stay
posted on 07/12/2009
From handheld units used to check stock in a warehouse to highly intuitive retail point of sale systems, fast and accurate data capture and entry is vital for many industries. And despite the arrival of innovative voice activated and touchscreen technology there appears to be no substitute for the old fashioned QWERTY keyboard for quick and positive information recording. Indeed, touchscreens, whilst offering quantifiable benefits in reduced training time and ease of use, are simply not suitable for all applications, especially within harsh manufacturing environments. And while touchscreens offer retailers the chance to display a wide range of pictures of goods, such systems are also far from ideal for repetitive tasks where pushing a solid screen - rather than a moveable key - could easily lead to repetitive strain injuries. However, there is also a growing awareness across industry - most specifically within the retail market - that the creation of highly tailored devices that combi... [more]

Flic en Flac, one of the main tourist areas in Mauritius, has seen crime significantly reduce since installing a distributed surveillance system using IndigoVision’s IP Video technology. This new project will cost around US$4 million. IndigoVision’s approved partner Brinks Mauritius designed and installed the IP Video surveillance solution. The sy... [more]
Truck hijacker apprehended in five minutes thanks to Vericom MRM
posted on 30/11/2009
Monarch Recovery, a Cleveland-based repo company, recently recovered a stolen tow truck using the tracking and reporting System "Vericom MRM" from Intergis. The Vericom MRM fleet management system features in-vehicle GPS tracking devices that report vehicle location, speed and driver status in real time. "Several weeks ago our driver (my son) went to repo a car from a garage which wasn't there and walked back to the tow truck," explains Monarch Recovery CEO Tim Murdock. "As he approached, a hijacker was sitting in the cab pointing a gun, then drove off." Monarch immediately notified the police and worked with dispatchers - with information from the Vericom MRM system that tracked the vehicle street by street. The truck was apprehended in five minutes - an outcome that Monarch is confident would not have happened as quickly, if at all, without the system. Monarch originally installed the system on a few vehicles in their fleet of tow trucks in 2009. "The Vericom MRM units en... [more]
