Connexion2 lone worker protection protects Oxford City Council housing officers from verbal and physical abuse
posted on 06/12/2006

Oxford City Councils housing department is responsible for managing 8,100 properties. Housing officers are required to deal with a host of related issues including anti-social behaviour, rent collection and arrears, neighbour nuisance, domestic violence and keeping pets. Oxford City Council has adopted Connexion2s lone worker protection, Identicom through Vodafone, in order to protect its housing officers from verbal and physical abuse. As personnel frequently visit tenants and occasionally confront potentially abusive situations, the Council wanted to ensure that its staff had the ability to discreetly raise the alarm if threatened. Existing methods for lone worker safety relied on colleagues acting as a point of contract for personnel away from the office. A contact centre number was also available whereby staff could register when they left and returned to the office. However, registration was not always completed and also gave no indication as to a persons movements when a... [more]

Tyco CCTV system helps London Borough of Islington improve safety and security
posted on 04/12/2006

A new, enhanced command and control room replaces the old Kings Cross control room that opened in 1997 and had run out of capacity to handle the growing number of CCTV cameras operating 24 hours a day around the borough. These include 70 existing crime and disorder cameras and 22 dual-purpose enforcement cameras plus infra-structure for an additional 30 cameras covering Kings Cross, Finsbury Park, Archway, etc. and 11 brand new cameras at the Emirates Stadium. The system is designed for further expansion as additional cameras are added to the system. The project included 17km of fibre-optic and data cabling, 64 monitoring screens including touch screens and video wall, and over 37 terabytes of networked digital recording capacity with fast retrieval and replay. Live images can also be shared with the local police, Metropolitan Police as well as with the operators of the Emirates stadium. The new 650,000 control room features an impressive monitor wall with over 160 sq ft of display... [more]

Leading Surrey school installs high specification CCTV system
posted on 01/12/2006

Sunbury Manor School has 1070 pupils and shares its grounds with a local leisure centre. Frontline Security Solutions was awarded a contract to design and install a CCTV system that would take advantage of the latest technology. As part of that process, Frontline carried out a full site survey and then conducted a product evaluation session for the school which included demonstrations of a large range of CCTV products. This allowed the school to see how an effective CCTV system could be used on site. The final solution was an upgrade from the much smaller analogue system that was already in place at the site and sees the integration of a number of the existing cameras with the new technology. Two Bewator Eventsys Pro 32 channel DVRs, each providing 1Tb storage, have been installed, one in each block of the school. Local cameras are cabled back to each recorder and from there are connected to the school's LAN/WAN. "By networking the cameras in this way we have made it possible fo... [more]

During winter, cameras struggle to capture an image without sufficient light
posted on 01/12/2006

Most crime takes place under the cover of darkness, and during winter, light levels can drop as early as 4pm, leaving surveillance systems vulnerable from mid-afternoon onwards. As light levels drop, cameras will struggle to capture an image and without sufficient light, picture quality can seriously deteriorate. An awareness campaign throughout ADI-GARDINERs nationwide branch network is switching installers on to the need to give greater consideration to illumination throughout the dark winter nights. As one of the manufacturers supplied by ADI-GARDINER, Derwents awareness that many CCTV cameras fail to capture useable images due to poor illumination has created a series of long life halogen and LED based Infra-Red illuminators and accessories for CCTV. The Dark Nights Campaign has been hammering home to the industry the importance of specifying and installing the correct type of lighting. Derwents Infra-Red lamps are specifically designed to work with the surveillance camer... [more]
