Mercedes Links with Eurowatchto Fight Car Crime in Europe
posted on 09/03/2004
In a first for car manufacturers, Mercedes-Benz is to offer its own vehicle-tracking product with a cross-border service that covers all of Europe for its luxury passenger models. This represents a major advance on current tracking services which are limited to a vehicle's country of registration. To provide the supporting infrastructure, Mercedes has signed a master agreement with London-based Eurowatch, which already provides monitoring and police access services to commercial transport and freight owners. According to Eurowatch, the combination of its service and the Mercedes product meets the criteria of insurers and police in each of the countries of Western, Central and Eastern Europe where it is being offered. "Insurers are increasingly worried about the high level of crime directed at luxury cars and this is forecast to escalate further following the expansion of the EU eastwards later this year" said Mark Schwarz, Commercial Director of Eurowatch. From May, the pro... [more]

Changing number plates did not foil Thales Telematics stolen vehicle recovery system
posted on 01/03/2004
Thales Telematics’ fleet management solution successfully assisted in the rapid recovery of a Ford Transit Van even though the thieves immediately changed the vehicle number plates and drove the van out of the area, in a fruitless attempt to hide their crime. The vehicle owned by Seathurst District Heating, was stolen from near Atherstone, Warwickshire at approximately 07:00am on February 9. However, with the assistance of Thales Telematics, the vehicle was located and safely retrieved by the neighbouring district’s police force, providing dramatic vindication of Seathurst District Heating’s decision to choose the Thales system to protect its personnel and manage its fleet of vehicles. The driver quickly contacted his transport manager, who duly contacted the police as well as Thales Telematics and the stolen vehicle was very soon located. Thales Telematics uses a high level positioning technology, with street-level mapping to pinpoint and follow the exact position, speed and directio... [more]
