Boating: all at sea or safe and secure
posted on 30/04/2004

Burnside Telecom has developed an innovative and cost-effective communications solution that offers a new level of security to boat owners and charterers. Traditional security systems depend upon alarm sirens and flashing lights, which - like home alarms - are too often ignored. However, the Burnside Desktop Mobile sidesteps this problem by using SMS text messages to monitor, control and track any boat within GSM/GPRS network coverage. Specialist marine alarm systems can be prohibitively expensive, whereas other large systems often lack functionality. However, Burnside Telecom claims that its unit costing £395 excl VAT provides an affordable and effective alarm, control and tracking system. The Burnside Desktop Mobile was originally developed for the business market, and provides any location with phone, text, pc fax and data facilities using the GSM/GPRS mobile network. However, it can be easily adapted for use on boats. It runs off 9-30VDC, draws just 40ma whilst on standby, ... [more]

The aim will be to provide officers in the field with secure, timely access to their central intelligence system whilst on the move. The Mobile Criminal Intelligence System effectively provides the officer with a mobile office. Using hand-held units, police officers will be able to input and extract criminal intelligence data at source, which will automatically update the force's central intelligence system. All intelligence is immediately available, force-wide, and importantly there is no duplication of effort inputting forms. This will save huge amounts of time and put more officers on the street, as well as ensuring a greater level of safety for the officer by arming them with vital information on the suspect before they step out of their car. The system uses secure, state-of-the-art wireless encryption t... [more]
