Chubb alarm systems and cameras protect James Bond museum
posted on 05/06/2009

The James Bond museum, in Keswick, Cumbria, includes various Aston Martins and Lotus cars driven by the different actors who played 007 including Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan. Among other highlights are the original gun from The Man with the Golden Gun, and a Russian T55 battle tank from GoldenEye. The collection was sourced through auctions and donations from Bond filmmakers EON, actors and crew from the movies. The props are housed in the world’s first museum dedicated to the films of James Bond, opened on the 100th anniversary of Bond producer Albert Broccoli's birth. Museum founder and curator Peter Nelson has spent many hundreds of thousands of pounds on his collection. Peter has also travelled the world to acquire the cars. “The museum features the Lotus Esprit S1 submarine from The Spy Who Loved Me, which was found in a Bahamian scrap yard,” Peter says, “and the original Ford Mustang, that did an incredible two wheel stunt in Diamonds are Forever, was found in N... Tracker recovers stolen car in 60 minutes
posted on 04/06/2009

A 80 year old North Yorkshire farmer parked his car while he was on a Sunday morning walk in a remote country lane, near his North Yorkshire farm. He left the keys in the centre console of the vehicle as he did not want to drop them while walking. A short time later, the farmer saw his BMW being driven off with another vehicle following behind. It only takes a second for thieves to seize an opportunity to steal a car. Luckily his BMW X5 was fitted with a device from Tracker. Although the car was gone in 60 seconds, Tracker had it back in 60 minutes. “Worryingly, around 74% of all vehicles Tracker recovered in 2008 were stolen using driver’s keys,” explains Stuart Chapman, Tracker’s Police Relationships Manager and a former senior Police Officer. “This story illustrates how dangerous it is to leave keys in the car, even in an isolated place where you think no one is around.” Tracker activated the device at 11:11 am and the signal was picked up almost immediately via one of its anten... Easier detection of TATP explosive
posted on 03/06/2009

The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology is Israel's leading science and technology university. Researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have discovered six new polymorphic crystalline structures of triacetone-triperoxide (TATP), the easy to make but difficult to detect explosive, thought to be used in the July 2005 London bombings and increasingly used by terrorists worldwide. TATP is popular among terrorist organisations around the world for two reasons - it is easy to prepare and very difficult to detect. The findings will make it easier to detect TATP, even when it is concealed. TATP was previously believed to have just one crystalline form. However, using methods that include X-ray crystallography (which reveals the arrangement of atoms within a crystal), Professor Ehud Keinan of the Technion Faculty of Chemistry and colleagues have found the explosive can form at least six different types of crystals, depending on the conditions during its synthesis and c... Selectamark watches out for boat theft in Watchet
posted on 27/05/2009

The historic Watchet harbour in Somerset dates back to Saxon times but has been refurbished with a state-of-the-art marina containing 250 berths for both pleasure craft and charter fishing boats. Maritime security has been tightened at the seaside town of Watchet following the launch of a new Boat Watch scheme using SelectaDNA forensic marking. The Boat Watch initiative, which has helped to reduce theft and criminal damage in many boating communities around the UK, was set up in Watchet in response to a spate of thefts from the marina. One recent incident involved the local Sea Scouts’ base, which was broken into and £1,200 of gear, including two kayaks, was stolen. The new scheme involves the Watchet Boat Owners Association, Watchet Harbour Marina, Avon & Somerset Police and West Somerset Council. It has received funding from the Safer Somerset West Partnership. On the day of the launch at East Quay, boat owners had their boats and expensive marine equipment security-marked us... [more]
