posted on 27/07/2010
According to research from BridgeHead Software, secure data management is the healthcare industry's most pressing issue as hospitals transition from paper-based health records to electronic systems. The Data Management Healthcheck 2010, a global survey into hospitals’ ongoing strategies for managing their IT systems, found that the top IT spending priority for 2010 was disaster recovery (44 per cent), closely followed by Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS, 38 per cent) and digitising paper records (35 per cent). John McCann, Director of Marketing at BridgeHead Software, said, “The healthcare industry’s data environment is notoriously complex, with most hospitals navigating a variety of systems from a range of vendors for managing different types of clinical data in different locations, both on and off hospital premises. When healthcare information systems go down, bringing that information back online is an intricate process. Healthcare IT professionals need to know w... [more]

posted on 21/07/2010
According to research by Software AG, over 50 per cent of public sector organisations are failing to keep records on inter-organisational secure data transfer procedures and costs. The information was obtained via a series of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, which quizzed organisations on their usage of postal and courier services for such transfers, staff time and handling costs and spending on removable media. The research questions were asked to local authorities and central government departments across the UK. A total of 14 organisations out of 26 were unable to provide any information at all, with one responding ‘“[we] are not currently required to keep records of any information/data that is transferred.” “The public should be very concerned that such limited insight into the procedures and costs surrounding the transfer of sensitive information between organisations is so widespread,” said Tim Holyoake, lead technologist at Software AG. “It means that compliance with t...
