Confident Technologies gives its 2012 Authentication Predictions
posted on 22/12/2011
As we quickly approach the end of the year, here are some Confident Technologies’ top 5 authentication predications for 2012. They include authentication trends that we think will emerge next year, as well as some predictions about some specific attacks that could happen next year. 1. BYOMD (bring your own mobile device) will spell big trouble for businesses in terms of data loss in 2012. Employees and contractors are increasingly bringing their personal smartphones and tablets to work and using the devices for a blend of personal and business related activities. 2012 will bring even more of this and we’ll see a few high-profile incidents of enterprise data loss resulting from allowing employees to connect their personal mobile devices to the company network without proper security protocols in place. The end result will be more businesses enforcing stricter authentication and security policies, particularly in regards to what information can be accessed, used and stored on mobile dev... [more]

Costas Galonis, Chief Technical Officer of Cirrus Stratus highlights the Pros and Cons of Cloud Computing
posted on 19/12/2011
When you talk to a Cloud supplier they talk about the business benefits of Cloud computing. However, Cloud can make the headlines when it fails and for those who over-complicate it. Cloud computing provides organisations with an alternative way of obtaining IT services and offers many benefits including increased flexibility as well as cost reduction. However many organisations are reluctant to adopt the Cloud because of concerns over information security and a loss of control over the way IT service is delivered. These fears have been exacerbated by recent events reported in the press including outages by Amazon and the 3 day loss of Blackberry services from RIM. So what approach can an organisation take to ensure that the benefits of the Cloud outweigh the risks? Before we de-mystify Cloud computing let’s define it. Different people interpret cloud computing differently so let’s settle on the National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST SP800-145) definition as the best on... [more]
ForeScout Technologies Recognised as a Leader in the 2011 Magic Quadrant for Network Access Control
posted on 15/12/2011
ForeScout Technologies announced this week that it has been positioned in the “Leaders” quadrant of Gartner, Inc.’s “Magic Quadrant for Network Access Control.”1 The Magic Quadrant analysis is based on Gartner’s assessment of a company’s completeness of vision and ability to execute. According to Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Network Access Control2, leaders are successful in selling large NAC implementations (10,000 nodes and greater) to multiple large enterprises. Leaders are pure-play NAC vendors or networking and/or security companies that have been first to market with enhanced capabilities as the market matures. Leaders have the resources to maintain their commitment to NAC, have strong channel strength and have financial resources. They have also demonstrated a strong understanding of the future direction of NAC, including the impact of BYOD and guest networking. Leaders should not equate to a default choice for every buyer, and clients should not assume that they must buy only fro... [more]
Corporates will have to invest in data protection if they do not want to face huge fines
posted on 14/12/2011
The European Commission is planning to impose fines of up to five per cent of global turnover on errant companies losing private data. Varonis advise major companies to invest in the necessary data protection before it is too late. David Gibson, director of technical services with the unstructured data security specialist, says that the changes to EU data protection legislation – which will reportedly be announced tomorrow - are long overdue. “We’re already seeing the UK regulator, the ICO, imposing its first major fines on public sector bodies, so it’s clear there is a wind of change in the air. And with penalties of five per cent of global turnover – rather like serious motoring offences, the advice has to be to shape up, or face the consequences,” he said. “Because they are based on turnover, these penalties have the capacity to wipe out a corporate’s global profits for the year and that makes the topic of data protection a top boardroom topic, if it were not one before,” he ad...
