Balancing Data Security, Integrity and Accessibility
posted on 06/11/2008
BeCrypt believes that most staff currently banned from working outside of secured locations would be able to resume off-site working if the right security products were implemented. In its new white paper ‘Data Handling – A practical Guide’ BeCrypt explains how Government organisations and their business partners can roll out centrally managed data security solutions that are transparent to the user, so will not impact on business productivity. BeCrypt has recently announced new products that will enable public sector organisations to comply with the latest Data Handling recommendations laid out in three separate reports. BeCrypt Client, which is currently going through CESG CAPS approval is BeCrypt’s CD/USB media/file encryption solution. FIPS 140-2 approval is expected in the third quarter of 2008. In addition, BeCrypt Trusted Client™, its secure remote working solution that is carried on a USB stick is also expected to gain CESG CAPS approval soon. Marc Hocking, Chief Technolog... [more]
1.5TB Removable Disk Backup Media launched by ProDefence
posted on 05/11/2008
ProDefence has launched a 1.5TB removable SATA disk for use with their line of removable disk backup systems as part of Idealstor’s product suite. ProDefence who distribute Idealstor’s products in the UK and Ireland, produce removable disk backup systems that are designed to replace or augment tape backup. The Idealstor backup systems are available for organizations of all sizes with systems available with 1 removable drive bay up to 8 with removable disk capacities up to 12TB per system. Unlike most disk to disk backup systems on the market today that are designed for storing data, Idealstor uses a combination of hardware and software to make the disks removable so they can be used for offsite storage of data and disaster recovery. Idealstor removable media utilizes non-proprietary 3.5” SATA2 drives as backup media. These drives are available as a kit from ProDefence that includes a ruggedized removable disk caddy and a protective carrying case. “This announcement is espe... [more]
Lipstick on a Pig sums up the approach to IT security in most enterprises
posted on 04/11/2008
As someone that has become engrossed in the upcoming US elections, Barack Obama’s comment about Lipstick on a Pig resonated because in my opinion it just about sums up the approach to IT security in most enterprises today. You have SOX, PCI, Basel, ISO or whatever other policy you can think of and as long as you carry on doing things in the same old way you might as well put “lipstick on a pig”. Over the past year after countless incidents of sensitive data loss or misplacement, and small fortunes being spent to investigate the how and the why, incidents continue, and in my opinion this is primarily due to the failure of organisations to implement the necessary technologies to ensure the policies are enforced. It is, therefore, absolutely essential that adequate controls are put in place to ensure that highly sensitive data is protected from abuse. There are best practice solutions, as well as commercial solutions, that can guarantee no matter how resourceful or determined someone m... [more]
SafeNet secured CCTV.com online broadcast of the 2008 summer Olympics
posted on 04/11/2008
CCTV.com was the only official internet/mobile broadcaster of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, and therefore owned exclusive rights to the broadcast of all audio and video content via online and mobile distribution channels across Mainland China and Macau. CCTV committed to protect the intellectual property of the IOC against piracy. CCTV.com selected SafeNet’s Digital Rights Management (DRM) solution to provide copyright protection for live and on-demand online video footage of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. “CCTV.com is pleased to have partnered with SafeNet since June, to undergo a DRM trial evaluation for our 2008 European Soccer Game broadcasting. SafeNet successfully met all security requirements and was therefore selected to protect the Beijing Olympic Games online broadcasting against copyright infringement,” said Wang Wenbin, CEO, CCTV.com. “The copyright of the Olympic Games is too important to us as it affects the economic interest to the International Olympic Committee... A quarter of law firms admit to losing confidential information
posted on 03/11/2008
According to a survey by Credant Technologies amongst 100 legal firms across the UK, 24% of UK legal firms have confessed to misplacing at least one mobile device containing confidential documents. These losses leave the data saved to the device vulnerable to exposure with case-notes, contracts and client details typically at risk. 37% of lawyers believed that if they did lose their mobile device it would be insecure as a hacker, or identity thief, is 'cleverer than the average lawyer' and could access the data it contains. A paltry 13% of those that had lost a mobile device were confident it couldn’t be breached, or used against them, as only this small percentage of law firms were security savvy enough to encrypt the data residing on them. This survey was conducted amongst the legal profession, often perceived as the savviest of all the professions, however, when it comes to respecting customer confidentiality, it would seem they are just as clueless as other professionals and ...
