Absolute Software helps UK police cracking down on computer theft
posted on 18/04/2008

The recent spate of high profile UK Government data loss incidents appears to be beyond measure. But these reflect a simple truth: today’s world is increasingly mobile, and the devices we use to achieve that contain even more critical information, business, governmental and personal. Absolute® Software’s tracking and recovery software, Computrace®One™, is unique in that it provides the underlying services in the form of Theft Recovery Officers who work directly with police around the world in order to track lost and stolen laptops and return them to the rightful owners. Absolute has recovered over 5000 stolen computers world-wide and that number is growing rapidly given the prevalence of mobile devices and their attractiveness to thieves. With over 2.5 million users globally, Absolute’s technology and services are recognised as powerful tools to support police efforts and it has recently been awarded the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) ‘Secured by Design’ accreditation. ... PGP Mobile encryption allows enterprise users to easily protect data on smartphones
posted on 14/04/2008

Recent research conducted by the Ponemon Institute found the leading source of data breaches in both the United States and United Kingdom was the loss or theft of mobile devices, including smartphones. With the cost of data breaches averaging $197 and Ł47 per record respectively, the protection of data transferred and used on mobile devices is highly critical. Many organisations have only started to recognise this imperative, and have subsequently turned to data encryption after experiencing a breach. PGP Corporation has announced the availability of PGP® Mobile, its newest encryption application that allows enterprise users to easily protect data on smartphones. While businesses have dramatically increased the use of mobile devices over recent years to improve productivity and customer service, the risk of losing sensitive data stored on those devices has also increased. With PGP Mobile, data is encrypted automatically and can be shared securely with other mobile and desktop users.... [more]

Encryption: Don’t forget your keys
posted on 11/04/2008

The protection of sensitive data is one of the most critical concerns for organisations and their customers. Coupled with growing regulatory and governance pressures, this is forcing businesses to protect the integrity, privacy and security of information under their control more than ever before. While this is a complex challenge that requires both policy and technology, cryptography is emerging as the foundation for enterprise data protection and is quickly becoming the cornerstone of security best practice. It is the last line of defence. Even if perimeter security is breached, cryptography means the data remains worthless unless it can be unlocked. Once seen as a specialised, esoteric discipline of information security, cryptography is finally coming of age. Cryptography and encryption are not new technologies. Ever since the Egyptians – encryption has been seen as the most reliable way to secure data. National security agencies and major financial institutions have long protect... [more]

The next generation of secure email delivery
posted on 08/04/2008

Email has evolved into one of the most important methods of communication in the business world today, enabling organisations to share information and interact with customers, employees, clients and partners. However, the growth of email traffic has been matched by an increasing security threat, and email has become a serious potential weak spot in corporate IT systems. As a number of high-profile cases in recent months have demonstrated, the exposure of an organisation’s most sensitive information can result in financial loss, legal ramifications, and brand damage. Securing email communication, therefore, has to be a priority for any IT department especially as email, no matter how well protected, is more easily hacked than well-secured web sites. Traditionally, the only way organisations have been able to guarantee that the content of their emails are not intercepted during transition between email servers has been to encrypt the contents using public key infrastructure (PKI). Thi... [more]
