Spammers try to hijack Halloween
posted on 23/10/2007
Spammers are trying to hijack Halloween festivities to grab personal information from internet users. A new spam email campaign tries to lure recipients into handing over a wide range of personal information with the promise of a $250 gift card. The email uses a variety of puns associated with the spooky celebrations on 31 October. Clicking on links contained in the email takes computer users to a website containing Halloween imagery. The website asks for a large amount of personal information including email addresses, postal addresses, phone numbers and date of birth, before presenting a stream of questionnaires on subjects as diverse as student loans, gender and cigarette smoking. "It's not immediately obvious whether this spam is being sent to commit identity theft or whether it's market research gone mad. If you visit the site and give it your personal information the chances are that you will be bombarded with unwanted junk email until hell freezes over," said Graham Cluley, sen... [more]

According to Webroot Software's latest report, “State of Internet Security: Protecting Small and Medium Businesses”, SMBs worldwide are very exposed to Internet security threats. In conjunction with the report, Webroot has released a handbook for SMBs, “A Guide to Security for Small & Medium Business” that provides tips and best practices for protecting technology infrastructure and sensitive customer data from malware and cyber criminals. “Unlike larger corporations, SMBs often lack the monetary resources and IT expertise to install and maintain the type of protection needed in the face of today’s growing malware threats. The real dichotomy here is that most of these companies think the real threats are viruses and worms, but the reality is th... [more]
Clearswift Releases MIMEsweeper for SMTP Edge Server as part of MIMEsweeper Re-Architecture
posted on 19/10/2007
Clearswift has introduced the new MIMEsweeper for SMTP Edge Server an email firewall that protects business critical infrastructures from spam, viruses and malware. This new architecture allows MIMEsweeper for SMTP software to focus on its core competency-data loss prevention, outbound content control and policy enforcement, with the Edge Server providing dedicated, self-managing boundary hygiene. In addition to filtering the spam, viruses and malware before it hits the internal network, the Edge Server provides a safe and trusted connection for confidential communications between an organization and its valued business partners through the use of TLS encryption. By deploying the Edge Server, a company’s servers will be more reliable, the networks faster and storage less packed with unwanted information. With less information flowing to the main core of MIMEsweeper, email will arrive faster and reporting will be more responsive while reducing the amount of maintenance required. W... [more]
