Transactis' Virtual Store Detective and ClaimsID enable online retailers to tackle fraud
posted on 02/12/2010
With remote shopping offering enterprising fraudsters an environment in which deception can provide ready access to goods easily converted into hard cash, the impact on retailers is vast. Profitability suffers as refunds are issued, replacement goods are redelivered and call-centre advisers spend time talking to customers. Transactis has launched two new technology platforms to help online retailers interact with their customers in real time in order to reduce the risk of fraudulent transactions. One of the anti-fraud solutions was developed in consultation with and adopted by Shop Direct Group (SDG), the home of 11 leading retail brands including Littlewoods, Woolworths.co.uk and Very.co.uk. With the launch of Transactis’ ClaimsID – the solution tested and implemented by SDG – and Virtual Store Detective, retailers can be better equipped to reduce both their exposure and the costs associated with fraud risk by being able to use customer data in real time to quickly identify fraudul... Russia replaces the USA as world's top spammer
posted on 02/12/2010
According to Kaspersky Lab's monthly report on global spam activity, for the first time in recent years, the USA has dropped out of the top ten sources of spam, finishing October in 18th place. Russia has now pushed the USA from pole position in the global spam distribution list. The dramatic reduction in spam traffic originating from the USA was caused by the closure of the Pushdo/Cutwail and Bredolab botnet command centres, both of which made use of networks of zombie computers that were primarily located in the USA. Despite the closure of the above programmes, spammers wasted no time in immediately searching for other ways to make money in the run-up to the festive season. “It’s very likely that near the end of the year, spammers will turn to Christmas-related mailings,” said Maria Namestnikova, senior spam analyst at Kaspersky Lab. The report also showed that PayPal once again had the unenviable distinction of being targeted most by phishers, accounting for one third of all ... [more]
Redscan explains how to combat VOIP security threats
posted on 01/12/2010
VOIP technology is becoming increasingly popular as businesses seek to provide employees with latest telephony services, connect remote workers and keep costs under control. However, the associated security threats must be recognised and guarded against, according to a new guide from managed security company, Redscan. The guide, ‘Securing Voice Over IP systems’ sets out the major security risks that businesses which use VOIP systems and software can encounter. Including: Privacy concerns: the data from VOIP calls can be intercepted easily when compared to analogue calls. Businesses can mitigate the risk by taking security measures such as using individually firewalled vLANs and encrypting calls. Access and authentication: there needs to be a strong authentication process in place. If a single password is used to identify a user it must be strong enough to discourage hackers. Denial of Service attacks: VOIP networks are vulnerable to DoS attacks such as hackers flooding serve... [more]
