Critical Infrastructure Attacks to be prevented by McAfree

McAfee confirmed that they would collaborate with Intel to better protect the world’s energy utility ecosystem, including generation, transmission and distribution, from increased cyber attacks. The two companies have provided a blueprint for a comprehensive solution of multiple products that create layers of security and work together without great complexity or without impacting availability. Solutions from McAfee and Intel deliver a variety of technologies for securing the energy infrastructure environments, decreasing chances of malicious attacks, increasing uptime and decreasing resource intensive responses to fix and update systems. Rising security breaches cost UK plc billions in the last year, shows new PwC/Infosecurity Europe survey

• One in seven large organisations has been hacked in the last year • The average large organisations face a significant outsider attack every week - small businesses face one a month • 20% of organisations spend less than 1% of their IT budget on information security • Customer impersonation up threefold since 2008 – financial services affected most The number of large organisations being hacked into is at a record high; the overall cost of security breaches to UK plc is now billions of pounds a year, a new survey of 447 UK businesses shows. In the last year, one in seven large organisations has detected hackers within their systems – the highest level ever recorded since the survey started in the early 1990s. Furthermore, 70% of large organisations have detected significant attempts to break into their networks in the last year, which is another record high. 19% missed a critical deadline because they couldn’t access the right applications

Avecto, the leader in Windows privilege management, revealed the results of its recent survey that showed the massive cost to both organizations and people of mismanaging user admin rights. • 19% missed a critical deadline as a result of being denied full access to an application, 14% lost a job and 6% missed a promotion • Nearly three in ten people don’t have access to all the applications they need to do their jobs • 16% of people would be tempted to use their admin rights to access sensitive data if they still had them after they left their company • Nearly a quarter of users call IT support 3 or more times per year because they can’t get an app to work because of admin rights issues • More than 1 in 5 people know someone in their organization who has breached IT security policies “We always knew that there would be a significant impact on businesses if they mismanage user admin rights– security breaches, people accessing data after they leave or expensive help desk calls. ... UK companies leaving the security of their data on cloud to chance, shows research by PwC/Infosecurity Europe

• Only 38% of large organisations ensure that their data held by external providers is encrypted • 56% of small businesses don’t check their external provider’s security • Half of organisations of national importance use cloud for business critical data Many UK companies are failing to keep a proper check on the security of their data held by third parties offering cloud computing services, new research shows. Although three-quarters (73%) of organisations are using at least one outsourced service over the Internet, only 38% of large organisations ensure that data being held by external providers is encrypted. Furthermore, more than half (56%) of small businesses don’t carry out any checks on their external providers’ security and rely instead on contracts and contingency plans.
