posted on 07/04/2009
ForeScout Technologies has announced that The Doctors Company, America’s leading physician-owned medical malpractice insurer, has deployed the CounterACT™ family of appliances for network access control and threat prevention in its eHealth network. Implemented across company sites, CounterACT protects The Doctors Company’s mobile workforce against malware, viruses and the danger of data theft. “Prior to CounterACT, we took measures to protect our network against intrusive threats and removed vulnerable laptops from the network,” said Johnny Lane, Network/Security Engineer at The Doctors Company. “With CounterACT, we were able to control access to our production LAN, bring all laptops back online quickly and protect against malware intrusion in real time.” Today’s insurance providers face a steady influx of vulnerabilities introduced by contractors and employees who are able to bypass physical security and gain network connection inside the perimeter defences. In research conducted by Cloudmark last year, mobile operators across Europe admitted that up to 20% of their users are affected by mobile SMS spam. globull mobile security platform eliminates vulnerabilities of unsecured PCs and USB keys
posted on 24/03/2009
Police figures show that on average 34,000 notebooks are stolen every year in the UK The MoD admitted in July 2008 that 658 laptops have been stolen over a four year period, and in Feb 2008 the Government admitted that over 200 laptops had been stolen from various departments such as the Ministry of Justice and Northern Ireland Office. The open world of today demands increasing mobility of staff but also of their access to data. Many organisations require their key staff to carry out much of their work-related activity outside corporate office locations. These working practices carry with them increasing risks of industrial espionage and the theft of sensitive data. These losses do not merely have major impact in terms of productivity and competiveness, but also harm the corporate image – when data is lost so is trust. And this does not start to take into account the financial penalties. Bull has announced the launch of globull, a premier platform for mobile security, a secure soluti... [more]
Protecting Data with an identity-aware network
posted on 23/03/2009
On a traditional network, access is required by numerous users. Once on the internal network, regardless of rights to applications and directories, users can often covertly gain access to data. This worry is on the increase with the rise in remote workers, web applications and VPNs, which make it even more difficult to have an effective network perimeter. Traditional firewalls can help to protect the network perimeter from attack, but once you start to try to use them to secure data within the network, it can limit the flexibility needed by an organisation. On the other hand, NAC and personal firewalls control admission to the corporate network and basic access control, but fall short on securing data within the perimeter. EpiForce, developed by Apani, operates at the network layer and is transparent to users and applications. It offers a solution to create an identity-aware network that both protects data and network communications by isolating users, servers, clients and mission cr... [more]
UK organisations fail to protect data with encryption
posted on 18/03/2009
More than half of UK public and private sector organisations are still risking data breaches and leaks, because they do not have data encryption in place to secure information on laptops, handheld devices and removable storage media. This is one of the key findings of the second annual UK data security survey by Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. According to the new survey of 120 IT managers and senior IT staff, 49% of respondents said they had data encryption solutions deployed in their organisations. 38% said they did not, and 13% said they did not know if encryption was in use. This represents just a 1% increase in organisations deploying encryption to protect sensitive data in the past 14 months. This is despite 2007 and 2008 being the worst years on record for data losses and leaks, with over 30 million records lost by public and private organisations in the UK alone. In Check Point’s first UK data security survey conducted in November 2007 (the week of the huge data l... [more]
