Keeping IT security costs down
posted on 05/06/2009
Ten tips to keep IT security costs down in the recession: 1. Move to UTMs (unified threat management systems) UTMS save money over multiple point solutions. They can cost just a quarter of the price of multiple solutions. With UTMs you have fewer devices, so you can save on energy costs, rack space and air-conditioning. If you deploy multiple UTMs throughout an organisation, and use centralised management and reporting, you can significantly reduce the time spent on admin and management. There are also fewer ongoing management costs from factors such as training, maintenance and upgrades. And you only have one dedicated platform to support. Companies such as Check Point, WatchGuard and NETGEAR have solutions in this area. 2. Beef up your web filtering List-based web filtering security tools don't provide effective control against proxy anonymisers, which allow staff to browse restricted sites undetected by many web filtering systems. Consider moving to solutions that provide ... [more]

A rise in cybercriminal activity is expected, with internet adoption rates driven by mobile broadband becoming more widespread. Recent Police statistics suggest that over 800,000 mobile devices are reported stolen annually in the UK. Last year also saw an unprecedented growth in the number and sophistication of computer threats. Trend Micro is now recording 1,500 unique malware samples per hour (up from 600 a month in 2004) and predicts that this will rise to 26,500 per hour by 2015. Trend Micro has announced that it has been selected as the exclusive content security solution at The Carphone Warehouse, Europe's leading independent retailer of mobile phones. ForeScout CounterACT protects Albany County network
posted on 25/05/2009
Local government offices need a way to keep track of their network assets and manage “coming and going” devices and users. ForeScout Technologies' CounterACT addresses this requirement by detecting every connecting device in real-time and enforcing network security policies across all managed and unmanaged devices – desktops, laptops, non-OS systems and USB drives – without the need for a software agent of any kind. ForeScout Technologies has announced that Albany County, New York has standardised on the CounterACT™ family of network access control (NAC) appliances in its local government network for real-time visibility and control over all network devices. “After a lengthy evaluation of seven NAC solutions, we standardised on CounterACT for its ability to give us instant plug-and-play visibility into everything on our network - minus the hassle and headaches incurred with competitive solutions,” said Perry Blanchard, network security engineer at Albany County. “CounterACT is now a ... Adding identity and application control to the network
posted on 22/05/2009
Networks today are blind. As analyst firms such as Gartner have pointed out, IT doesn’t really know which users are on the network. Similarly, IT knows very little about the application traffic on the LAN. IT relies on cryptic tools to stand in for user and application data, but these tools can rarely be used to tie the information back to real-time traffic. But if networks have been blind to users and applications for a long time, why is this black hole a problem now? Changes in business practices have changed the risk dramatically. Organizations now host far more people, many of them “outsiders” just visiting, and users are increasingly bringing in more and more applications all the time. Realistically, businesses need these changes for the productivity gains they enable. Companies need to work with partners and contractors to complete projects efficiently, and often new applications drive new levels of collaboration amongst employees. So the key is for IT to allow these fruitful pr... [more]
Home workers need the same levels of security and support as office-based staff
posted on 22/05/2009
Five million Britons were expected to work from home on Friday May 15th, with Work Wise UK’s objective being that half the UK’s working population – some 14 million people – are able to adopt flexible, remote and mobile working, and working from home by 2011. The right network service, support and security are key to making home networking a reality. According to TFM Networks, businesses must ensure they have the right network and proper support in place, if they are to reap the benefits of increased employee productivity and lower operating costs that home networking can deliver. Brett Rowe, director of sales and marketing at TFM Networks said: “The economic and operational benefits of home networking and flexible working policies are compelling, offering a cost-effective means of expanding your business, retaining key staff and overcoming lost time commuting, as well as the constraints of traditional office hours. “Factor in the need for business continuity planning in the event ...
