Astaro all-in-one security appliances safeguard the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh IT infrastructure
posted on 29/06/2009

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) is a professional membership organisation representing over 10,000 medical professionals worldwide, and uses email as a core communication channel with members. The College had relied on its ISP to manage its anti-spam and anti-virus solutions but found that the security system in place was also impacting the delivery of legitimate traffic. Astaro has announced that the RCPE has implemented Astaro’s all-in-one security appliances to safeguard the College’s IT infrastructure and significantly reduce the time spent by the IT team on email management. Using the Astaro Security Gateway appliances, the College now has the ability to easily manage its anti-spam and anti-virus services in-house and has established a finely tuned system for identifying email security threats. “Previously, we were seeing too many false positives in our spam, where legitimate email traffic would not get through. The filters would be sent over to the IT tea... [more]

One in five IT security managers cheat on an audit to get it passed
posted on 18/06/2009

According to the annual "Reality Bytes" security survey by Tufin Technologies of IT security managers and technical staff, 20% admit to cheating on an audit to get it passed. The survey also discovered that 63% of companies only check and audit their firewalls from anything between 3 months to a year, with a staggering 9% never bothering to check their firewalls at all. 51% admitted that their firewall rules are “a mess.” The survey found that 22% of firewall audits take anything from a few weeks to a few months, with 70% saying that their audits take a few days. However, from a security perspective with audits not being undertaken frequently and with many taking time to conduct, it can mean that many companies have firewalls that, at best, are running under par and, at worst, contain shadowed or obsolete rules that introduce unnecessary risk to the organization. Tufin also found that more companies than ever before are buying IT hardware from ebay, a trend Tufin was aware of ane... [more]

European organisations unaware of printers IT security risks
posted on 18/06/2009

Despite public concerns about the protection of sensitive information, organisations across Europe are failing to take steps to protect it. According to a Samsung Electronics Europe-wide survey of more than 4,500 workers in the public and private sectors, companies are not putting in place appropriate measures to protect confidential information. 56 per cent of workers regularly see confidential documents abandoned on the printer and over half (51 per cent) of those surveyed are not aware of any processes or technologies in place at their organisation to protect the printer network itself. Those working in the banking/finance sector were most likely to see confidential documents, with more than two thirds (68 per cent) of respondents seeing these on the print tray. The healthcare sector did perform better, but still more than one third of respondents (34 per cent) admitted to finding personal patient information left on the printer – including health records (38 per cent) and lab re... We’re held to a similar level of regulatory compliance, and we can also expect regular visits from Nevada gaming commission auditors, so this solution has long been a necessity.
