Khipu Networks protect Oxford University college networks against student misuse and access from unauthorised guests
posted on 07/04/2009

Khipu has deployed Bradford Networks’ Campus Manager (BCM) at Pembroke College and New College, which between them comprise more than 1000 students, enabling IT staff to control student access to the colleges’ existing fixed and wireless networks. Thanks to the deployment, students can now gain quick, easy and secure access to the internet as well as college network resources via their PCs, laptops and other mobile devices including iPod Touch and PDAs. Both colleges had previously faced challenges handling large volumes of student network registrations, particularly at the start of each university year. Pembroke College relied upon a resource-intensive manual process, which left many students waiting to be connected for several weeks. New College had a legacy system for registering devices; however this was for its wired network only, could not be updated and would only recognise a limited range of devices. The two colleges engaged with Khipu to help revamp their systems, and as ... [more]

Brixton slashes disaster recovery time from three weeks to under an hour
posted on 03/04/2009

Brixton plc, a specialist owner of industrial and warehousing property in the UK, has completed a major overhaul of its disaster recovery implementation. Led by Panacea Services, London-based Brixton plc has slashed its recovery time from three weeks to under an hour. Brixton plc previously employed a disaster recovery plan based on backing up to tape and the tapes then being taken offsite. This proved to be time consuming and inefficient so Brixton looked to improve its IT infrastructure by developing up-to-date recovery technology and processes to cope with potential major disruptions. Following a total network restructure including adding in virtualised servers, Brixton worked with Panacea Services to install two PlateSpin Forge appliances. The appliances now back-up data automatically in a matter of minutes. The implementation means that Brixton is now able to restore a fully functioning working environment in an hour. Paul Lawson, Head of IT at Brixton plc said: "This progra... [more]

Syphan Technologies supports Bradford University research into techniques to detect the latest multi-staged stealth attacks
posted on 25/03/2009

Syphan Technologies, which has developed high-speed threat protection technology, has agreed to provide financial and technical support for a new research project based at Bradford University’s School of Informatics. The project, code named SINBIN, is focussed on developing new inspection techniques that are capable of detecting the latest multi-staged stealth attacks. These are increasingly being used to get round widely used point-security methods and gain access to sensitive data and applications used by major organisations for their day-to-day operations. The results of the work will be of global significance in the fight against cyber-crime. The research project, at the University’s campus based in West Yorkshire, is headed by Dr. Irfan Awan and a team of post-graduate students who, with help from Syphan have created a purpose-designed test lab capable of simulating the full range of threats found in the real-world, enabling them to test their threat protection technology under t...
