Ukrainian cybercrime server infects millions of computer
posted on 22/04/2009
Finjan’s Malicious Code Research Center (MCRC) has discovered a network of 1.9 million malware-infected computers. Corporate, government and consumer computers around the world were infected by the malware. This discovery is part of a research conducted by MCRC when investigating command and control servers operated by cybercriminals. The cybercrime server has been in use since February 2009, is hosted in the Ukraine and is controlled by a cybergang of 6 people. These cybercriminals established a vast affiliation network across the Web to successfully distribute and operate their malware install-base. They compromised computers in 77 government-owned domains (.gov) from the UK, US and various other countries. The malware is remotely controlled by the cybercriminals, enabling them to instruct the malware to execute almost any command on the end-user computer as they see fit, such as: reading emails, copying files, recording keystrokes, sending spam, making screenshots, etc. Since th... Improper implementation of server virtualization may leave IT networks open to attack
posted on 15/04/2009
A recent YouGov survey commissioned by Clavister found that more than 40 per cent of IT directors and managers that have implemented server virtualization may have left their IT networks open to attack because they wrongly believed that security was built in. This lack of understanding is one of the most dangerous misconceptions surrounding virtualization and it was recently highlighted as the target for new security threats by respected analyst firm, Gartner. While adverse global economic conditions may be affecting other sectors of the IT market, the virtualization explosion continues. However, in the rush to take advantage of the cost benefits of virtualization, many firms may be compromising their security, according to Clavister. Andreas Åsander, VP product management at Clavister said: "Securing the virtual environment cannot be approached in the same way as the physical environment as virtualization offers new points of attack and gives access to a far wider number of applic... Implementing Network Access Control
posted on 08/04/2009
When done right, Network Access Control (NAC) offers a myriad of benefits. These include on-the-fly authentication of appropriate users and ensuring that all end-point devices get access only after they’re proven to be compliant to internal security policies. However, many NAC solutions are designed in such a way that they require significant, and often convoluted, changes to existing network infrastructure. Whether it’s network appliances that need to be installed at each location, or client-side agents that must reside on each end-point, many NAC solutions require not only significant up-front investment and system and network changes — but also continuous feeding and caring. All of this overhead reduces the cost benefits that should be realized from a NAC solution. As you are considering a NAC solution, you should select one that limits the number of hardware, configuration, and network changes. By minimizing the alterations to your organization, you’ll save on your deployment cos... [more]
