Make sure your assets are well protected as fuel theft rises in the region
posted on 14/03/2012

Last week the BBC reported the incredible rise in fuel theft across the UK, and Lincolnshire is one of the worst hit areas and with a reported 8,235 cases in 2011, more than 1,200 of them were in Lincolnshire alone. Fuel and heating oil theft has been rife in the country for the last year and the ever increasing rise in fuel cost is driving criminals to petrol and diesel theft, as well as heating oil. According to Humberside Police where the problem is at its highest levels, the most common method of fuel theft in the area is directly from vehicles. Thieves drill directly into the fuel tank of parked vehicles, and drivers don’t notice anything is wrong until they start the engine and attempt to drive off. This method is extremely dangerous as a drill is normally used. The combination of petrol fumes and a hot drill bit can potentially cause the tank to ignite. Andrew Percy, MP for Brigg and Goole, is a strong supporter of FairFuel UK campaign that strives to bring down fuel pric... [more]

VIVOTEK Keeps India’s Oldest Library Collection Safe and Sound
posted on 29/02/2012

Goa Central Library, located in the State of Goa, West of India, is the oldest library in the country. Since the Library opened its door in 1832, the facility has maintained a collection of nearly 200,000 books in Goa’s official language of Konkani, as well as many other languages. The book section carries Goan newspapers dating back 130 years as well as a collection of literature printed in Goa of the 17th century. The Library also houses a number of rare collections documenting Goa’s past as a Portuguese colony and other items of historical importance. Challenges While the Library owns many valuable items, its most recurrent security issue has been visitors thoughtlessly tearing pages out of books or otherwise damaging them. Lost and stolen books, disturbances resulting from loud conversations, and theft of stationery were other problems that administrators hoped an effective monitoring regime could help alleviate. Solution Goa Library’s facilities encompass a wide variety of ... [more]

UK's largest solar farm trusts Unipart Security and Westronics ' security solutions
posted on 29/02/2012

The UK’s largest UK solar farm has placed its trust in Unipart Security Solutions’ Monitoring & Response Centre to keep watch over a security system designed to deter and detect intruders who might consider entering the facility containing valuable high tech solar panels. Westmill Solar Farm is located in a remote location on the outskirts of Swindon. In addition to the cost of replacing solar panels, the ability to provide power for the National Grid could be severely affected if acts of theft or malicious damage were to occur. A security solution was therefore required which would allow mobile patrols to be rapidly directed to the precise location of any incident. Upon completion of a tender process, Blue Energy, awarded the contract to install a security system to Reading based system integrator, Westronics Fire & Security Ltd. Whilst the robustness and ease of use of the security system, which needed to be effective regardless of the weather or lighting conditions, was the... [more]

Darlington’s Void Properties Protected From Metal Theft
posted on 27/02/2012

EMPTY Council Housing properties in Darlington that are undergoing repairs or awaiting new tenants are being protected from burglary by SelectaDNA, a hi-tech forensic marking system. Following a recent increase in metal theft of items such as boilers and copper piping in the local area, Darlington Borough Council is taking positive action by marking fittings and fixtures in all of their properties before thieves can get their hands on them. The costs associated with this are minimal and involves housing officers visiting void properties and using a SelectaDNA kit to mark the items with a unique DNA code. Details of the code are kept on a secure database and can be used to trace stolen boilers or pipes. It also allows police to link criminals caught stealing metal to the exact crime scenes. Councillor Veronica Copeland, Darlington Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Housing said: “Empty properties can be vulnerable to metal theft unless they are properly prote... Charter's vertically rising shutters protect Community Centre
posted on 17/02/2012

Edinburgh’s new Royston Wardieburn Community Centre has been specified with sophisticated security shutters from Charter Specialist Security, the UK’s leading manufacturer of built-in roller shutters. The original Centre, built in 1969, was no longer able to fully meet the needs of its community and its single storey, flat roof design left it vulnerable to vandalism. The new purpose built Centre on the same site as its predecessor is altogether different, featuring a contemporary daylight filled, yet secure design, over two floors. The glazing in the double height Café elevation provided architect Paul Grierson with a challenge. The Centre is built to Secure by Design standards, featuring toughened glass and requiring security shutters. Due to the height of the glazing, standard security shutters were not an option. The Charter-Integr8 180V vertical rise shutter from Charter proved to be the only solution. The Charter-Integr8 180V is a unique shutter design that rises vertica... [more]
