Engineers consider industrial action against ADT Engineers consider industrial action against ADT - RSS feed from Security Park

ENGINEERS AT ADT FIRE AND Security could take industrial action after they complained that global tracking systems (GPS) deployed in their vans could be used to spy on them.

ADT installed GPS tracking devices in 50 vans earlier this month. The devices, hopes ADT, will help customers know precisely when an engineer will turn up for an appointment.

Some workers, however, feel the tracking devices could infringe their civil liberties - ADT workers are allowed to use their vans out-of-hours.

The Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU) is to ballot its ADT members - of which there are around 1,300 - on whether to take industrial action against the security company.

'Big Brother' claim

AEEU general secretary Sir Ken Jackson said: "There's plenty of time for ADT to change its mind. From the reaction we have had from members of the public, it's clear that tracking devices are an infringement of civil liberties."

ADT stated that no decision has been made on whether the GPS devices will be used in engineers' vehicles. The devices have been placed in 50 vans as a trial, the company emphasised.

It's possible ADT could placate its workers by fitting the tracking systems with a device that enables engineers to turn of the tracking device when they're off-duty.
