Kings Security Systems commissioned to ensure that Leeds City College student and staff safety is a top priority
(12/03/2010)
Through its merger, Leeds City College brings specialist provisions together i.e. Catering and Hospitality (Leeds Thomas Danby), Electrical & Engineering Crafts and Computing (Leeds College of Technology), Business training courses (Park Lane College Leeds), and trade/construction courses (Park Lane College Keighley). Leeds City College now has more than 60,000 learners, including approximately 700 higher education students, 2,000 staff members and a turnover of £70m a year.
When the tree prominent colleges in West Yorkshire merged to form Leeds City College, Kings Security Systems were commissioned to ensure that student and staff safety is a top priority, as education facilities can be a target for vandalism, theft, and arson.
EMCOR chose Kings Security Systems to provide all aspects of electronic security at the Park Lane campus in Keighley because the company are experts in supplying fully integrated electronic security solutions and has one of the most technologically advanced monitoring stations (ARC) in the country. The ARC provides the college with a skilled team and the latest technologies providing fast response times and complete support.
The scope of work undertaken by Kings Security Systems started 9 months ago, with a project value of £300k. The project requirements included internal and external CCTV, access control, intruder alarms, disabled toilet and refuge system, induction loops, door entry systems, and fire and gas suppression.
CCTV system technology adds immeasurable reassurance to students and staff knowing that on-site security is a priority to a college management team. Together with intruder alarms, CCTV systems act as a powerful deterrent to unauthorised access. It enables an immediate communication link for teaching staff in the classroom, or when working alone out of teaching hours.
All the relevant security systems are linked to the 24-7 monitored ARC at the Kings Head Office.
Kings installed a disabled Refuge Alarm System - communication systems designed especially for use in refuge areas around the college. The system enables fire officers/building management to keep in contact with the Refuge Areas throughout an emergency and is fully BS5588 compliant. Induction loops have been installed to assist those with hearing problems.
Access control and door entry systems control the access into ‘high value areas’ such as computer rooms and offer added protection to staff and students.
Together, Kings Security Systems and Leeds City Technology have now created a security partnership, which gives total peace of mind to the Keighley campus.
Jim Bradshaw, Senior Building Services Engineer - North East, BAM Construction Ltd commented: 'We found Kings Security Systems approach to be a breath of fresh air. From their involvement in the initial design right through to the installation and final commissioning of the complete package they were great to work with and we would have no hesitation in recommending their services on future projects'.
