Police officers from Slovakia recently visited the UK to find out more about SelectaDNA and to see how it was being used to prevent crime in the Buckinghamshire area.

Thames Valley Police have been using SelectaDNA’s forensic property marking system to fight burglary and other acquisitive crimes as part of the force-wide Operation Breaker campaign, which was launched in July.

Two high-ranking Slovakian officers met with Chief Supt Paul Tinnion, Buckinghamshire’s police commander, and then visited Aylesbury Police Station’s Forensic Investigation Unit. The officers also met with Mr Nick Gilbert, Thames Valley Police’s business crime expert.

Supt Richard List from Thames Valley Police said: “Forensic marking works on two fronts. Not only does it give us a technological advantage over burglars and other criminals and helps us to convict them, but it is hugely reassuring to residents, as warning stickers on home windows are a huge deterrent to criminals.”

He continued: “The introduction of SelectaDNA is only one example of the close working relationship we have with local councils to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour. I am delighted to be able to share these ideas and technologies with colleagues from Europe. We need to continually share best policing practice not just nationally but internationally.”

One of the Slovakian officers said: “We are always looking for new ways of gathering evidence and we want to learn more about how Thames Valley Police use SelectaDNA. We are hoping it will help us solve more crimes and bring more criminals to justice.”
