Egress Switch protects and controls sensitive information shared outside the NHS City and Hackney boundary
(27/10/2009)
NHS City and Hackney frequently share confidential information with a wide range of community services in order to provide high quality health care. Having implemented secure FTP and traditional file encryption to share information securely, these technologies proved complex to operate and difficult to maintain.
NHS City and Hackney PCT has selected Egress Switch to protect and control sensitive information shared outside the NHS boundary. Egress Switch presented a new alternative to sharing information outside NHS boundaries that combined strong security and simple end user experience.
“One of our most important needs is to understand who is accessing NHS information,” stated Tim Wilson, Associate Director of Informatics. “Switch provides a full audit trail so it is easy to see who is accessing shared information and when and where the data is accessed.” He added, “Even better is the control that Switch provides, allowing access to be revoked immediately if we suspect that information may have fallen in the wrong hands. This solution is unique in that NHS City and Hackney retains control of its data even when sent outside the NHS.”
Egress Switch allows sensitive information to be packaged using strong AES 256-bit encryption. This information can then be shared with named recipients in a variety of ways such as attached to an email, burned on a CD/DVD, copied to a USB stick or transferred through the web or FTP. The owner of the information can then set or change security policies independent of the package through a service in the network cloud. Security policies can include authorizing recipients and limiting recipient access. These changes can be made in real time, even after the information is sent or shared. This allows a user to “pull information back” if it needs to be recalled.
Egress Switch also offers a complete view of recipient activity regarding the shared information, as well as unauthorized access attempts, providing a complete audit trail. The owner can easily monitor their information to meet audit requirements. Delivered in a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model, Egress Switch has a growing base of users worldwide.
