Checks recently took place in Derby city centre, across the Glossop, New Mills, Buxton areas of High Peak, and the Bakewell, Matlock and Ashbourne areas of the Derbyshire Dales. SIA investigators and officers from Derbyshire Police visited 51 bars, pubs and clubs across Derbyshire on Friday 2nd October and into the early hours of Saturday morning.

Compliance was high at over 97%, with just three of the 110 operatives checked found to be working without a licence. By law, all door supervisors must hold a valid SIA licence and display this at all times while working. It also an offence to supply or employ unlicensed door supervisors.

Two of the individuals are to be reported for summons by Derbyshire Police for the offence of working unlicensed; the third ran from the scene. Police and SIA enquiries are now ongoing. In addition, three individuals were issued with a warning for failing to display their licence.

The checks were conducted as part of Derbyshire Constabulary’s operation Relentless ‘Safe and Confident,’ to tackle anti-social behaviour with the aim of improving public confidence in the community. Derby City Council, Erewash Borough Council, Amber Valley District Council and Derby Trading Standards were also involved in the operation.

Nigel Davies, an SIA head of investigation, said: “It was encouraging that only a small number of the door supervisors checked were unlicensed. However, there appeared to be an apparent disregard to licensing in some rural areas in the Dales, where individuals seemed to believe they could flout the law and remain undetected. We will continue to work with our partners to seek out any such pockets of non compliance and ensure that individuals and companies are dealt with accordingly.”

Sergeant Jon Lloyd from Derbyshire Police said: “This partnership working with the SIA shows the combined commitment from both agencies to use whatever powers are available. This is to make sure that the individuals who are working on the doors as door supervisors are properly trained and authorised, so that a consistent approach is experienced by anyone enjoying a night out in Derbyshire.”
