West Yorkshire Fire ensures its personnel and equipment are fully protected with Leerose
(10/09/2009)
Recognising the security challenges facing all emergency services organisations, West Yorkshire Fire has implemented a rolling programme of upgrades to ensure its stations’ personnel and equipment are fully protected.
A major project by West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Services to upgrade security across its network of local fire stations has led to a number of successful security tenders for Leerose Integrated Systems including an extensive installation at the service’s headquarters in Birkenshaw, Bradford.
Its Birkenshaw headquarters, which include a central control room mobilising appliances across the region’s 48 local fire stations, therefore specified a fully integrated security system.
Leerose was able to fulfil the entire specification, including an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system which is pre-programmed to recognise only the vehicle license plates of employees, as well as any regular third party visitors or contractors, preventing unauthorised site entry by any other parties. All incoming and outgoing vehicles are monitored and recorded so that even if a breach of security does occur it is recorded for retrospective scrutiny and action.
The comprehensive access control and CCTV measures at Birkenshaw are mirrored on a number of other fire station contracts, successfully completed by Leerose working alongside consulting engineers, Robert Whetham Associates.
Key sites in Bradford, Leeds and Stanningley and latterly Gipton and Hunslet have all been fitted with Leerose access control systems. Each individual station is able to monitor its own security locally, but the information is also fed into a central control unit at headquarters to provide a county-wide perspective of security measures.
