The recent contract between IBM and the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) to administer the National Biometric Identity Service (NBIS) database, has been welcomed by biometric access specialist UKB.

The contract will provide a secure database for storing facial and fingerprint images for the next generation of biometric passports and will support the delivery of the National Identity card.

UKB Chief Executive Officer Matthew James said: "The biometric security industry has come a long way in the past decade and can now offer robust, ‘spoof-proof’ technology, but we still have a mountain to climb in educating end users and the general public about how our technology works, and the high levels of security offered. The association with an international blue chip corporation like IBM will help our industry disseminate factual information and help offset some of the more woolly accusations levelled against us."

He added "Many otherwise enlightened commentators still base their assumptions about biometric technology upon kit that became obsolete three or four years ago, which is a long tome in our fast moving segment. I think I can speak for the whole UK biometric industry when I say I hope the PR and lobbying power of IBM will help us in the aforementioned task of education."
